Parker transferring

  • Really split on this... it's good to be honest and tell a guy his playing time is going down... but on the other hand it doesn't seem right to recruit a guy then tell him to GTFO once you recruit someone better. Once someone's a Terp they should be encouraged to be a Terp for life.

    Turgeon didn't recruit him.

I'm for it as long as it's simply a matter of Turgeon laying out options and telling him that he doesn't foresee much playing time going forward. I wouldn't be in favor of telling him that his scholarship would not be renewed and he has no choice but to move on, but from Parker's release I don't get the feeling that he was told he had no choice in the matter, just that he would in all likelihood be better off moving on if he wanted significant playing time.

  • I really wish he would have stayed. IMO Parker was a "Freshmen" this season, due to his lack of playing time under Gary, and playing under a new coach and system this year. Looking at it that way, he had a good year and showed progress. His ballhandling needed improvement, in the offseason, He could have been that slasher that we need. Faust is really the only one that we have now and Mychal is 2 inches taller. I think his defense improved and his long arms helped when we went zone.

I hate to see Terps leave, and I really don't like it when they are pushed out will giving effort on the field and court.

I have faith in Turge, so I respect his decision. I wish Mychal well. He will always be a Terp.

    Layman ... Jake Layman!

  • Disappointed to see the guy go, but that is an incredibly mature outlook. I hope he lands somewhere he contributes and enjoys the rest of his career.

  • Redshirting next year will give him a full year to work on his game and moving down a level he can be more of the go to guy. He would never be the go to guy here. Good move for him seeing he wants to play pro ball after college.

For such a time as this.

I hate to see lions eating cheetahs head first but it is survival of the fit.It keeps everything in balance.

Turge gave him ample time to get into a better situation.I would have a problem with coach if he did nothing to make MD a better situation for recruits and fans.

The bolded part may seem right in a utopian world, but that's simply not how college athletics have worked in many years.

There are no orange slices or participation points.

And we're not privy to everything that occurs behind the scenes ...

  • scholarships are 1 year renewable

Turgeon ain't want him..told him to gtfo, he didn't want to renew

I think Turgeon comes off like a dick a lot of the time but in a situation like this, can't be mad at him...gotta move on

I don't like the practice of encouraging a guy like this to leave. There are no guarantees with most recruits so there should be no assumptions he would be excluded from the rotation IMO. Also, some guys get better and I don't think we should have ruled out his ability to get better if the desire was there, which sounds like it was.

I could not agree more. I am surprised Turgeon was so cold about it. It is probably best for him, and I still support Turgeon, but Parker looks way better on this one. Best wishes to him and thanks for saying such nice things about Terp nation.

Technically that's correct (not his recruit, scholarships are renewed every year) but having a guy like Parker leave or pushed out but keeping Pankey just doesn't make sense to me.

This is the first time that I know of where a MD MBB coach has publicly run someone off .I have followed the program over 30 years. Rival schools will use this in recruiting.

It may be the first time you recall, but it's far from the first time it's happened. Steve Goins, Shane Walker, etc. I'm not sure what you mean by publicly -- it just so happens that in this case, Parker mentioned the details. There was nothing public about it otherwise.

This won't be used in recruiting, because it's commonplace. All over the country this spring, there are coaches telling kids they'd be best suited by trying to get a fresh start elsewhere. Part of the business, especially when there are coaching changes.

  • If a coach doesn't think a player has much of a future with the program the bigger dick thing to do would be not telling him, letting him come back and then burying him on the bench behind a freshmen effectively ending that players college career. In this case the player is still able to transfer to a school where he is much much more likely to play big minutes and have a nice college career.

I am not an insider but this sounds on target to me.

    Why not?

Turgeon didn't make any details public.

Are we discussing how things actually are, or how we think they would be in a perfect world?

This is a rare situation, how often does a player write a multi paragraph blog about why he is transferring? Its usually a canned press release from the athletics department where the player says he is moving on.

There is nothing different about this than when Goins left. I wanted Parker to stay so I still kind of feel bad, but this is not some rare thing. I do agree though some people will read that and think poorly of Turgeon, and that is why I wish he didn't write all that, even though most of it was fine.

    VAHooper3

  • "I highly respect Coach Turgeon as a person for his honesty in this situation."

"I have no hard feelings towards the Maryland staff, and I completely understand the business side of things and will always consider myself a Terp for life."

"I would also like to stress how great the University of Maryland and its fans are. I truly do not believe there is a better fan base and institution I could have selected coming out of high school. Playing for one of college basketball's greatest coaches of all-time in Gary Williams was a dream come true. I also enjoyed my time under Coach Turgeon, whose understanding and teaching of the game really brought my play to a whole new level."

Yes we are so screwed, what a dick Turgeon is!

  • Wow, this is damning. A player most recruits have never heard of transfers and says nothing but good things about his coach, former coach, the fans, and the school. How the eff are we going to duck the fallout from this one?

YOU cannot be serious. This shit happens all the time in college sports. We just often don't hear about it. Usually, when a player is "pushed out," it's really not in his best interest to say that he indeed IS pushed out so we usually never hear about this.

Heck, Gary did this multiple times with his RTs and you cannot say you have followed the program for 30 years if you have not heard about the Tamir Goodman episode.

Layman will not plat guard. I think we're still hoping that Cassell will commit to us a second time.

Parker is a real classy kid. I bet MT didn't know how classy this kid really is until he saw his response about transfering. I doubt very seriously MT will replace this kid with anyone with more class.

Fair enough. I meant the 1,2,3. Faust could play any of the 3.
