MD Baseball Season Thread (32-24, 10-20)

  • Sam (Greenville, NC): Whats your take on the Keith LeClair Classic this weekend? Shaping out to be a good weekend with ECU, Purdue, WCU, and Maryland. Whats your take on the Pirates?

Aaron Fitt: Yeah, that's a nice field. Purdue and Western Carolina can really swing it, while ECU can really pitch and I think Maryland has a nice balance. The Pirates have to be encouraged by Jharel Cotton's strong outing on Saturday, and by the way its lineup performed. Should be a better offensive club than it was a year ago — another pretty balanced team. The top six hitters in the ECU lineup are all pretty good, and all capable of carrying the load on different days. I could see the Pirates breaking into the Top 25 in the coming weeks.

Jared (College Park, MD): Two "cold weather" ACC programs, Boston College and Maryland, had great first weekends. Do you project either team contending for a regional spot or will the ACC be too much for both?

Aaron Fitt: Too early to tell for both teams, but let's do the math. I think you've got six locks for the postseason with UNC, Clemson, GT, FSU, Miami and UVa, with NC State looking like a pretty strong seventh team. So if it plays out as I expect, you're probably looking at everybody else fighting for a maximum of one regional spot. Maryland, Wake Forest, BC, Duke and Virginia Tech all have things to like and dislike, and I'm not yet ready to declare which of them I like the most. But I did think Maryland looked feisty this weekend.

  • UCLA scored 19 runs yesterday. It was against Cal State Northridge, but still shows off that this weekend wasn't 100% UCLA offense sucking

  • The Keith LeClair Classic, hosted by East Carolina, features a strong field this year, thanks to the rise of two programs not ordinarily regarded as baseball powerhouses: Maryland and Purdue. The Terps set the college baseball world buzzing with their road series at UCLA—I probably received more chat questions about Maryland on Monday than in the previous five years combined, and I actually received radio and blog interview requests about the Terrapins for the first time I can remember. Like BC, the Terrapins have some more work to do to prove they are legitimate regional contenders, but they have the look of a balanced, dangerous club with a deep pitching staff.

  • . The Keith LeClair Classic
    Clark-LeClair Stadium, Greenville, N.C.
East Carolina (3-0); Purdue (3-0); Maryland (2-1); Western Carolina (4-0)
After last week's results, this tournament took on a whole new look with the Boilermakers going 3-0 in the Big Ten-Big East Challenge while Maryland took two of three at UCLA. ECU had a pretty breezy time getting past Wisconsin-Milwaukee last weekend, but this will be a serious step up in competition. Plus, come the end of May, the results of this tournament could mean a big bubble bump for whoever escapes with a winning mark here. Keep an eye on that potent Boilermaker offense, as eight starters return to the order and players like Kevin Plawecki and Cameron Perkins are capable of making minced meat of opposing pitching. Meanwhile, don't sleep on WCU either. Ross Heffley hit .419 last season and is a lock-down 2B/SS.

Assuming you are talking about video stream- none of the home games are sometimes the big road teams will have one.

Also our old friend the Reuben sandwich has a good interview with Bakich

  • Video streams? No with the exception of the Texas series last year. Audio feeds are available for home games from the umterps website and I'm guessing you can pick up audio feeds from the opposing teams websites.

  • Yea I was talking video, thats what I figured. I remember watching a stream of some of the Texas games last year so thats why I was curious.

  • The two tone numbers don't really work that well for football. They don't work at all for baseball and probably most other sports. Golds are nice, although I hope they don't take the place of the ridiculously awesome reds and whites too much.
