Jordan Williams Assigned to D-League

lol...look at you mr elitist hater.

if you had the chance to get paid $$ for playing bball professionally or having to get up for early classes, live in a shoebox, have no spending money, hang out at beltway plaza, listen to stupid nerd tutors, etc etc, I think most would chose $$$. This isn't cuba, he has free will and choice. He gave this team 2 years. He can't help it that gary recruited such dog squeeze crap that his departure would be that detrimental.

actually gary williams bailed on this team, not JWILL. Get off your high horse.

His contract is relatively small and non-guaranteed. Would hardly call it getting "paid".

he's a kid from a privileged background with amazing athletic ability who got a scholarship, but bailed on the academic part of it shortly into his sophomore year. he leaves school, gets drafted, and shows up with a double chin. i'm not hating on him for bailing on the team, i'm just saying i would feel sympathetic for nearly any Terp in his situation, but not finding any here. his pitfalls correspond to his bad choices.

I like Jordan and I'm not losing sleep over the fact that he left early. But now that he's in the D-League, is he still "Blessed"?

Come on out and get your whoopin!

  • The "showed up out of shape" is the most damning thing in that article. I harbor no ill-will towards someone making money, and doubt he would have improved his draft stock, but as a marginal fit for the NBA, that's inexcusable.

agree it's an old debate but I still have yet to get a good answer as to who the last 10 picks this year who would have eliminated any chances of Williams being a first rounder. We know the draft is stacked, usually people talk about lotto picks in this context (seriously has anyone ever said, man, that guy projected at #29 is a sure fire!). By their very nature, late first rounders are hardly locks.

    See Keith Booth.

Help me out - I don't really follow NBA, not nearly as closely as I follow college. He signed a two year guaranteed contract for rookie minimum - $500k a season, right? Does that get revoked by going to the developmental league?

It's not what one generally thinks of NBA paydays, and probably not what he was dreaming on, but it's a million anyway.

Actually his contract IS guaranteed. He'll get his 1 million bucks (minus tax and agent's cut, of course).

You're right that it is relatively small.

This is a very good point. You can add Steve Francis to this list as well. Nobody was upset Francis left because it was a logical decision. The decision by JWill showed no logic at all.

Nobody was upset Francis left? LOL. Wrong.

    small? 1 million bucks?

yeah...he probably prefers to live on campus eating dining hall food, going to crim justice classes, and hanging out at ratzi's than getting paid a million for playing bball.

I'm not sure you could have a more short-sighted view on life. Hopefully you're not a guidance counselor. The point is whether he could have made more Money long term, not whether he would have made more money for the next year or two.

Only stupid people were upset about that, and stupid people don't count.

After taxes and what he owes his agent for 10 months of living/traning facilities (at probably something like 30%)... Jordan probably has $300 K in the bank at the end of his 2nd year.

    He's hardly set.

I'm guessing you're young. There is nothing like your college days! I don't understand anybody who rushes out into the "real world". College was so much fun!

And that's an average student. I'm sure it's just terrible being one of the most famous ones on campus.

I'd bet when he's living in Turkey next year he'll wish he was living in a college apartment and eating dining hall food.

That's right, there were people mad at Francis...but I think more for making that statement and then reneging on it, rather than the choice he made. He was clearly NBA-ready.

Wilcox was a little more of a questionable decision, but it was hard for many of us to get too upset when we were basking in the glow of a national championship, and he had all kinds of NBA potential and has done OK.

Joe Smith, yeah we were all frankly just happy he gave us 2 years instead of 1.

With Jordan, the reports have been that he painted himself into a corner by not going to class, and that forced his decision. That is something that is worth getting some criticism, IMO, and it's also on Gary a little bit. The Chris McCray thing seemed to show that Gary's staff did not stay on top of class attendance and grades, and apparently that continued with Jordan. I know, I know, these are grown men and they SHOULD be able to get themselves to class and stay eligible without prodding, but it happens all over the NCAA and it seems like a lot of major college sports programs have tools and resources to stay on top of that.

  • Whoever was advising this kid should be wacked in the head with a baseball bat! His prospects were not good enough to come out in a normal year. Add to that the NBA lockout that hurt his chances even more. Some people just aren't that smart. Hope he enjoys his time overseas next year and he's able to collect some decent coin. That's the best he can hope for at this point.(which ain't too bad)

Gary's had one kid become academically ineligible in the last 10+ years and he's part of the problem? The kids have first pick at (easy) classes, mandatory study hall and their own tutors. Should they physically drag them to class?

That is 100% on Jordan and IMO is worth the majority of the criticism. He was given a free education and basically said "no thanks."

Maybe he could get his money back for the training facilities part...it doesn't seemed to have worked well in his case...

  • His decision was bad for him personally and for the program. It is also hard to have respect for a cat who quit in the classroom and came in out of shape. Making a questionable decision is one thing, not taking full advantage of the opportunity given to him is another. It is a shame for both.

You really consider a guy well into his 60's with that type of resume is "quitting?" I think a lot of circumstances other than JW leaving factored into him stepping down, one of which has to be that he outlasted Yow.

I don't care about JW quitting either, I just think that he had an opportunity and a decent prospect of a future and he seemed to want to take the easiest road to the quickest cash without any foresight beyond. For most guys, you have one crack at the NBA, you want to be in the best position possible when given that chance. I don't care what anyone says about this draft, a guy like JW with a solid season and MORE acclaim may have cracked the first round this year. With that comes more guarantees for a roster spot, 3 years/$3M and better development over that time. What's the worst that could happen had he stayed. His stock doesn't improve. It wasn't going to get worst unless he tanked it. so he gets his $500K contract a year later. what did he lose? It's not like he's has one extra year of pay from the NBA...at this rate he's not getting any other NBA money.

Yes I do. Out of the blue he announced that he was QUITTING.

  • it's well documented that he'd been trying to quit for some time and that people convinced him to stay longer. It's out of the blue to you as a fan, but people don't walk away from their life of 40-50 years without long deliberations. Would we all have wanted him to quit in April after the season or had a retirement circuit, maybe, but he instead quit in May. Oh the horror! Sometimes people just realize that enough is enough.

  • Good. Karma's a bitch, Jordan.
