At the end of the day, I consider Debbie Yow to not only be a miserable person (which I suppose isn't a dealbreaker in an athletic director), but on par with financial swindlers and fiduciary mismanagers like Bernie Madoff and the Enron folks (which is shockingly not a huge exaggeration given the amount of money at issue and is a dealbreaker in an athletic director).
1) She supposedly balanced the athletic budget which is a huge feat. Then issues enough self-laudatory releases and statements about it so that she tries to blind people from other crushing issues in the department with this supposed accomplishment.
2) We find out later that she was borrowing against future revenue to add enough revenue to the column of the books so that she could balance the books. In other words, we never actually had a balanced year-to-year budget unless she credited revenue that was not supposed to be achieved and enjoyed for many years down the line. She also balanced against the future revenues from naming rights to Comcast Center and Byrd Stadium. For example, Maryland was supposed to enjoy 10 or 15 years worth of revenue from the naming rights to Comcast Center. She borrowed against that and for the past few years and continuing onward we have no revenue coming in from those naming rights.
3) All this while allowing expansion of Byrd stadium to the tune of tens of millions of dollars, supposedly to be paid off by suite sales. Except she steadfastly refused to allow alcohol in the suites (combined with a 2-10 season from the football program). The suites don't sell and the athletic department can't service the debt.
As somebody earlier said, she screwed up the finances so badly that the football team had to bus back and forth six hours to a game in Carolina. Not acceptable for an FBS team. We bus to UVA and WVU because those are within 2.5 hours. That's it. And all along we had been sold a bill of goods that balancing the financial situation was her strongest suit and biggest accomplishment.
And all this setting aside the fact that she completely undermined her two revenue coaches by trying to get boosters to raise private money to buy them out when she realized she had no money to do so, and misjudged the boosters' loyalty to the coaches as opposed to her. The boosters ran straight to the coaches and what had at least been a manageable tension-filled situation exploded into an outright hate-filled situation.
You guys bought yourself a clusterfuck. We don't come onto Packpride to tell you this or to taunt you. We'll all be banned. And, quite frankly, I think we just pity you guys at this point. You can copy and paste this over there if you'd like. You came here, and here's the straight dope. We're more shocked that she got hired someplace else and we're just watching the two trains steam towards each other at 150 mph down the track, waiting for the inevitable destruction.

the financial pieces of this post are not only incredibly accurate, but also, for all intents and purposes, a criminal offense. for that, she needs to be held accountable - i wonder when our mess has all been sorted through and the true financials are available, whether or not someone will actually indict her for her actions

Someone correct me if I'm wrong...
At one point weren't;
Brenda's assistants being paid more than Gary's?" And, wasn't her recruiting budget higher? And, wasn't her budget for academic support higher? And, wasn't our football budget the smallest in the conference?
Our revenue sports were working on shoestrings -- no?
Also, I really wish someone (Crofton?) would chronicle how "she" balanced the budget when first arrived on campus. If I remember correctly the two biggest factors were, the school signing the Pepsi deal and the administration allowing the athletic department to account for out of state athletes as instate students.?. (karma being a bitch and all, i believe this practice was voted out by the state of NC just after she took the job at NCSU). Both of these were huge windfalls for her department....and I don't think she had much if anything to do with either. Again, I hope someone corrects me if i'm mistaken.
Anybody else want to take a swing at her laughable fund raising...marketing...personal management...lol.
You seem like a good guy Philawolf -- good luck.

Philawolf - also keep an eye on how much she communicates with your booster base, asking them their opinions, priorities, desires, etc. She got a flat F on her report card at UMD on this one, since she believed she always knew what to do and didn't need any input from anyone else, including a big chunk of the senior donators. As others have said, our "upgrade of Byrd Stadium" was a disaster from many perspectives. Much better use of that money could have been made to improve the stadium.
