How Many Games Does Rangoon Need to Win to NOT Get Fired?

jsh, are you naive, hopeful, or just silly? You have been defending angelos and now edsall. I just can't comprehend?

In what way did I defend Edsall?

also, ron vandy had twice the talent and we still stunk. we kept saying we would turn the corner cause of our recruits. Guess what, bad coaching leads to bad records regardless of talent.

also, did we automatically assume a winless season excuse when steffy got hurt against Rutgers or other QB's folded....no? Why are we assuming and excusing now?

He's right. Edsall isn't going anywhere after this season because we simply can't afford to get rid of him. It would take a worse season than the one we just came off of, but even then he'll probably survive because the loss at QB and the recruiting class he's bringing in.

But after next season buying him out becomes a possibility, and if he managed to dig himself even deeper this season, he'll have that much higher to climb to save his job. A better question would be "How many games does Rangoon need to win in the next two seasons to NOT get fired?"

Because of the guaranteed contract and the AD $$ problems (as well as the freshman QB excuse), he won't be fired even if he goes winless. Hate to say it, but I think it's true.

How true. Let's do the math: 5 remaining years on his contract @ 2 million per year, that 10 million we owe him today. Let's say we are the bottom dwellers of the ACC in December. That still leaves an 8 million dollar payout, not to mention the cost of hiring a new coach. All of this in the face of declining attendence at Byrd Stadium.

Those of us who wish to see the quick departure of Coach Edsall - have a long wait, I think. The "Golden Rule" applies here.

You didn't. I think Edsall stays as long as he keeps this team competitive, regardless of wins. If the whole season is like the Temple game last year, there's no way they can keep him. But if the team is reasonably competitive and wins a couple of games, Anderson will not get rid of him. Not that I agree with that.

  • probably 3.

I'm right on the fence as to whether I think he can do it or not.

my M is upside down this season in protest.

  • i think it depends what ticket sales are like this year. if it is a huge drop, and we have another edsall-caliber season meaning a likely further decrease in sales for 2013, they have to start thinking about reviving the program.

How could we possibly have a huge drop?

  • we averaged 42k last year based on the fact that we were returning a 9 win team with the ACC ROY QB. Edsall had somewhat of a first year bump.

this year i'd expect us to drop at least 3k down to the 2010 attendance number. with another bad season, we're staring down the barrel of the 30,000 person crowds of the vanderlinden era.

    RDurr

  • also, worth mentioning that we are going from 7 home games last year to 6 this year, so we're already losing about 40,000 tickets sold of the total attendance numbers.

I mean I was half kidding, but you saw the BC game. There is not much further down to go in terms of attendance.

I do think that if we'd have had the effort going into marketing for the football program back in 2010 that we have now (field, uniforms, etc.) then we'd not have had a problem selling out the FSU game. So I think winning will cure some ails. Though could be tough with the frosh at QB.

  • Every coach gets 3 years regardless. Since he had a good track record at Uconn, without a scandal, he gets 3 years. Maybe 4 if money is tight.

Many of Pitt's 58 "rushing attempts" were the result qb Tino Sunseri fleeing the pocket like a man whose clothes were on fire.

how many coaches in history have been worse than edsall their first year? not just turning a 9 win team into a 2 win team, but also losing every other category- media relations, fan support, having to fire both coordinators after one year, running off half the team, etc. if there was a way to be worse, i'd like to hear it.

Please stop using the BC game to justify any attendance argument.

Just drop 3k? I was thinking it would drop about 6k. Has there been any season ticket figures released?

  • I think we would have to go winless for Edsall to be fired. While I recognize the financial issues, not sure how you can keep a guy who won 2 games in 2 years, no matter how good the recruiting is.

    BoniMaroni

  • If he could somehow pull 5 wins out of his ass, that would be such a huge recruiting tool considering that we have no QBs.

And then we can fire him after next year.

  • I'm struggling to see how we win a single game on the road this year, unless we get lucky in Charlottesville or something. With Florida State on the home schedule, that leaves us basically no room for error at home to get to 5 wins.

I'm having trouble seeing more than 4 wins this year, and that would take some luck. Hope I'm wrong.

BC on the road should be winnable.

I purchased 5 tickets for my family to see the Terps play Temple at the Linc. For that, I expect to see a win for the Terps. It is a possibility, ya know....unless we lose to W&M Saturday a week... then no.

  • I don't think Edsall is fired regardless of the outcome of this season. All bets are off next season though!

How many of these injuries are attributable to the new field turf?

Seriously? We could all be dead after the next season, therefore, if this season is abysmal he should be gone at the end of it.
