Harrison Sr. Refutes Report

Twins are make or break for this new "era" in recruiting. If you have dad, the local connections and still cant close the deal for whatever reason, will the new regime learn what the old one did about going head to head with the blue bloods? Its tough.

    Couldn't disagree more.

We are in a new era. We have recruited well and fast, getting top names (Cleare), fast risers (Layman), out-of-nowhere not-yet-hot-prospects (Dodd) and a high profile transfer for our first class. And Turgeon got a late start. We have laid the groundwork with the DC and Baltimore communities (although Bino was starting under Gary) and we have made an all-out effort with a level of recruit we'd never have bothered with before. And it is clear we have plan Bs and Cs at every step of the way.

We are going up against Kentucky. Kansas and Carolina and Duke can't all beat each other out every time.

Every non-inside piece of information I am aware of suggests we have been real contenders here, not just a courteousy listing like Hodge or Gay.

It's always been an uphill battle. My gut when I heard the announcement timing was that it had to do with James Young nosing around Kentucky.

Whatever. I'm not giving up by any means, but I also don't by any means believe this is any way a make-or-break for our recruiting outlook or our program outlook.

Without the twins, its a motivated gary level class. Gary had cleare himself. Being a "contender" for a player means absolutely nothing to me. If he cant land the twins, who he has deep connections with, how can you reasonably expect other top players to reject the blue bloods and come here? If we cant win with UA and grandma's cooking, please tell me how they can go head to head with the blue bloods and win.

  • I don't think this is make-or-break for our recruiting, but it's pretty big. How often do you have so many cards fall the right way for major recruits (family nearby, relationship with coach, UA connection, friend on team)?

That's why I'm really worried about the choice, because things never seem to go our way. Every time Maryland seems to have a Mike Leach, we get a Randy Edsall.

Please let the good guys win for once. pray

Except for the times everyone else thinks we got a Turd Fergeson and we end up with Juan Dixon, Scott McBrien, E. J. Henderson, or a Greivis Vasquez.

    So what's the alternative?
Recruit nothing but 2nd and 3rd tier guys and hope you either find diamonds in the rough or that you can coach up the little engines that could to occasionally take the big boys?
I'm not naive enough to not recognize that there is a power structure in place that's tough to crack, but I don't think that means we throw in the towel on all top ranked kids.
I'm not saying Turge should just recruit the Rivals top 10 list without regard to their relationship to Maryland, but he absolutely has to keep working the local kids and the kids with previous connections to Maryland.
That's basically what Izzo does at MSU. He has gotten his share of 5 star kids, but for the most part they are midwest guys that he has a better shot at. Izzo has admitted frustration with not being able to recruit on the same level as UNC/Kentucky/Kansas, etc., and I think he'd admit he can't canvas nationally like a Calipari can, but that doesn't mean he doesn't strategically target certain top kids he knows he has a better chance at.
And if Turge proves his worth as a coach, he will win more and more of the battles.

Disagree. Dez, Evan (transfer from Michigan), Layman, Cleare, Mitchell, Seth...vs. Gibbs/Bruenig? And, I put Faust in with the first group, since Turg had to re-recruit him.
This is a way better recruit group than most of Gary's, especially in recent years.

Re ''being a contender meaning absolutely nothing if you can't land them," disagree here as well. No one gets all their dream recruits, but if a school isn't in the running, then there is a 0.0000000% chance of getting them. We're damn close with the twins, and the other two guards.

One prominent Nike-affiliated coach told me he recruits players off Adidas AAU teams but not any UA AAU teams because "You have no chance."

Don't forget Logan-El. They was ugly but well deserved. "But Antonio Logan-El’s live announcement back in 2006 was met with a slightly harsher response. The Forestville (Md.) High offensive lineman had been committed to Maryland for the better part of a year. While dressed in Maryland red in front of a Terps crowd at the ESPN Sportszone in Maryland — including head coach Ralph Friedgen’s wife — Logan-El first pulled out a Florida hat before tossing it to the ground. He then pulled out a Tennessee hat. That, too, was tossed aside before picking up the Terps black and red headgear. After a few nice words, Logan-El threw his Maryland hat to the ground and held up a picture of Joe Paterno and announced he would be heading to Penn State. The decision was met with screams of “traitor” and violence nearly resulted. Logan-El, much to the pleasure of Terps fans, washed out at Penn State after only one redshirt year."

Damn, that was ONE HELL of a jinx he put on himself AND Ped State!

    FEAR THE TURTLE, indeed!

Kentucky restaurant shut down after roadkill found in kitchen | The Sideshow - Yahoo! News

From the blog The Sideshow: Customers at the Red Flower Chinese Restaurant in Williamsburg, Ky., alerted authorities after they spotted something they probably wish they hadn't: restaurant employees wheeling roadkill back to the kitchen. Local CBS affiliate WYMT interviewed the witnesses. The roadkill was apparently a deer stuffed into a trash can. There was actually a blood trail they were [...]

I disagree with you. Gary's last classes were just a handful of athletes lucky to get a Maryland level offer. This Turge class is true basketball players chosen for specific roles. This might be a Gary class in 2000 - 2002, not any of recent memory.

Also disagree in that the twins are some sort of magical stars aligned recruits. Top talent comes out of Maryland ever year. Turge is coming off his first full year, competed with a team with a handful of scholarship players that weren't his and had a record that wasn't spectacular. Let him compete with this squad, improve his record and raise his profile before casting judgements on his abilities as a coach and recruiter. Go look at other top schools, not called Kentucky and UNC. Even Dook loses far more recruiting battles than they win. Being in the mix with top recruits continues to raise Maryland's profile. Being on ESPN and mentioned by top recruiting outlets continues to highlight our program.

Gary had Cleare and Justin Anderson in his last class (alex len and faust say hi as well). Very comparable to the turge class sans the twins. Unless the next KD or melo grows up a maryland fan, its always gonna be the same refrain. Being "in the mix" for good players means NOTHING if you don't get any of them. And my point is, this class is comparable to a Gary class when he actually was trying. Getting the twins puts it in the above and beyond territory. I give limited credit for getting Wells but gary tried to go down that same road and got rejected by the administration. Gary got sick of being playing 'the game" because he knew the results before it even started so he just said fuck it. Now we hire 400k a year "assistants" and full backing of the UA amateur army. Its not too much to ask for some real results and not bullshit about "high profiles" that don't mean dick on a basketball court. Kentucky, UNC, Duke are ALWAYS going to have a higher profile and if cant get the twins, who play for UA and have local ties, what is gonna stop other coaches from coming in and continuing to poach the local talent? NOTHING, just like always. Until the twins, or that next KD or whomever actually suits up for MD, its gonna be the same old shit. He has to break through, not almost break through.

  • This is going to be REALLY interesting, both sides and their "sources" aren't flinching, UK thinks they are standing very strong, as does Maryland, and to the person who said SMU, SMU is now out of the running, so not an option. It's UK or Maryland. Also, it seems UK's coaching staff has NOT looked anywhere else recruiting wise, nor from what can I tell, really has Maryland. They both seem confident, here's what it comes down to, the last visit Mark Turgeon made to Texas, was that the Twins telling him that they were committing to UK? Or that they will be a Terp? It seems Turgeon would/should know considering he visits, and then their decision is coming. It's going to be a fun ride guys. I did see a UK insider though, say this is the toughest recruitment Calipari has had to battle at UK, and take note, Calipari is all in on the twins, it's pretty obvious. Even with the UA connections and what not, it's still impressive Maryland has kept up this close. We'll see Thursday guys, good luck! We'll all need it!

It's been one freaking year since he took over. One year! Jeez!!
    .
UA will have plenty of other talent come thru its program. Every single year some stud grows up in the shadow of Maryland. I disagree the twins are a special case. They aren't even from here.
    .
Give the man a couple years to bring in some 5 stars. I'm not completely giving up on the twins yet. But if they did choose KY, it's not the end of the world.

  • Think of the recruiting battle for the Harrisons as a basketball season. If you got into the final two teams in terms of victories, but lost the tournament final game to the eventual winner, would you be disappointed with that season or prospects for upcoming seasons?

In a certain sense, in terms of UMD's recruiting stature, if we lose the Harrisons, it's like our FF loss to Duke (minus the cheating refs and the stench of Ratface). That was a benchmark for UMD that I wouldn't mind reaching, and I bet there's a boatload of REALLY GOOD recruits that take note of it too.

In any case it'll be moot, since they're signing with us.
