Greenburg quote about Stoglin

  • Bethesda Terp said...

You might not stand Greenburg but he is spot on about Stoglin. Stoglin's shooting percentage is less than the team average.

LOL, I wish I had a downvote left but there's been more stupid on the board today than usual.

I got the shotgun. You got the briefcase. It's all in the game though, right?

Oh, he's also 8th in the conference in FG%.

Gotta admit, I am surprised at those numbers. But I got no problem with Stogs taking wild (read bad) shots. I mean when his options are Michael Parker, P or Nick Faust on the wing hell I'd throw up an off balance 20 footer too. Gotta better shot of going in than Faust shooting an uncontested 15 footer.

I'm not sure what the minimum attempts or whatever for that list is, but I pulled it straight from theacc.com.

Most guards are going to have shooting %'s less than than the rest of the team because they are taking a lot of 3pters whereas the rest of the team is going to include big men who only shoot in the paint and are going to be shooting 50%. Stoglin has attempted almost half of the team's 3pters.

Stoglin is shooting 38.4% from 3pt. ROT is shooting 28.2% from 3pt.

Stoglin is shooting 45.3% from 2pt. ROT is shooting 48.2% from 2pt.

I don't feel like going through and doing "adjusted FG%" to account for all the 3pt attempts he's taking, but the notion that he is hurting the team because of his FG% is absurd.

    eFG%

    Stoglin - 50.7%
    Team - 48.0%

And that's not counting the fact that:

    a) Stoglin's average is buoying the team numbers by a point or two and
    b) it's significantly harder to shoot X% on 20 shots a game than it is to do it on 6 shots a game.

so, in other words, being that dumb or having that blatant of an agenda against our best player is unbecoming.

  • Yeah and I'm not so sure comparing his figures with the rest of the team when we all know that the rest of the team can't shoot worth a damn is a very good argument either.

I'm pretty sure the ACC site uses some absurdly high minimum attempts. He's actually 35th in FG% and 28th in eFG%.

Still, I assume the minimum would pretty much include most of the starters in the conference and Greenberg and Bethesda's comments are absurd.

    1. Mike Scott-VA SR 21 128 220 .582 Inside player should have higher percentage
    2. Tyler Zeller-NC SR 22 121 220 .550 Inside player should have higher percentage
    3. John Henson-NC JR 22 135 259 .521 Inside player should have higher percentage; lots of dunks

    5. Harrison Barnes-NC SO 22 137 283 .484
    6. Erick Green-VT JR 19 108 229 .472 lots of his percentage based on scoring in last 2 minutes when Tech is behind...both percentage and scoring average
    7. Travis McKie-WF SO 22 126 272 .463 lots of dunks increases percentage
    8. Terrell Stoglin-MD SO 21 144 341 .422

His percentage shooting is really 3-4 in ACC when you take away dunks and other junk that increases shooting percentages

Without getting into Greenberg/Bethesda's comments, your assumption is false.

Just a few starters ahead of Stoglin in FG% that don't appear on the ACC.com list: Mason Plumlee, Bernard James, Dexter Strickland, CJ Leslie, Ryan Kelly, Austin Rivers. In fact, at a quick glance, most of the guys ahead of Stoglin are starters (including both UNC and Duke's entire starting fives).

As I said before, the ACC's minimum qualifier is absurdly high.

First off I'm not cracking on Stoglin. He is by far our best player. I think he sometimes tries to hard and takes boneheaded shots. I guess Turgeon must also have an agenda against him since he's benched him more than once for taking dumb ass shots.

Regardless, your point b has to be one of the dumbest posts ever written. If it's harder to shoot a better percentage when you're taking more shots then maybe he shouldn't be taking more shots. I can't believe you're that stupid.

    Bethesda Terp

  • By the way. There's a simple reason why most didn't hate Seth Greenburg at first and hate him now. The fact is that freakin' football school has beaten us 6 out of the last 8 times we played before this year. They swept us last year. It's embarrassing as hell to have a football school beat us in OUR sport. If we had been beating VT, no one would even give Greenburg a second thought. Losing breeds contempt.

Since plenty of people tackled your 2nd sentence, let me go back to the first. In essence, by saying he plays for both teams, Greenberg is saying that Stoglin increases the chances of a Virginia Tech win, and your analysis is that this is "spot on". Do you actually believe this? He may take some ill-advised shots, but who on this team is not getting enough shots and would benefit from more opportunities? Now, that is a fairly low standard, and I can't even come up with one person I think should be shooting more. Even if there is, you then have to argue this players increased role would be more likely to increase our offensive performance than with Stoglin taking those shots. I can't think of anyone remotely deserving of this claim. Then, you have to make a third leap, into saying that the difference between this person and Stoglin's shots is so great, it actually benefits the opposing team. Are you serious? Have you watched this team at all? I have no idea how you can possibly agree that Stoglin's performance this year, as the leading scorer in the ACC, is beneficial to the teams in conference not named Maryland. This is incredibly stupid for one of our own fans to make this argument. Sorry, it just is

Excellent point in a thread about him making asinine comments about a Maryland player after a loss. To Maryland

Those 8 players that theacc.com lists are literally the only 8 that meet the qualifications for FG% leader (five made field goals per game.) I'm not sure why the ncaa has that requirement - it's really dumb. But anyway, Stoglin is last of those that qualify.

Same thing for the 3FG% list. Only six players in the conference meet the qualifications.

Maryland is lacking in talent. Everyone agrees. The way for a less talented team to win is to do what the Big Ten does. Take the air out of the ball. That means passing the ball around until you have an absolute wide open shot, preferably inside 18 feet. It means reducing the number of possessions in the game by waiting until you're well inside 10 seconds on the shot clock. It does not mean come down and firing up a contest shot with 25 seconds left on the clock. For god sakes he missed 17 out of 26 shots against Miami and some were absolute horrible. He shot 34% and the rest of the team shot over 44%. Unless you think Miami beat us with better play (which they didn't), then he lost the game.

Edit - I agree that Stoglin should be taking by far the most shots on the team. I simply want him to pass the freakin' ball, move without the ball so that he has shots without a hand in his face. I want him to take shots he doesn't have to alter.

Takes a lot of balls to call something the dumbest post ever and then follow it up by saying that our best player should shoot less.

LOL, stupid would be thinking inferior players should take more shots. Good job...you managed to say something really stupid while calling someone clearer smarter stupid. The fact that you can't seem to comprehend a law of diminishing returns on shot quantity doesn't make IT dumb.

  • Seth is garbage. He has been a no-talent, obnoxious piece of shit since the day he started coaching in the ACC.

Also, I don't believe he has ever stood up to Duke or UNC. He only started calling out Duke when hating on Duke became acceptable in the mainstream media. It's not like he was a heroic pioneer. He is a carrion-eating jackal.

And Stoglin made 6 threes and the rest of the team made 0.

Stoglin had 24 points on 26 FGA
Rest of team had 36 on 41 FGA

Which of these represents more efficiency. (HINT: The answer is Stoglin)

What game are you talking about? Terps scored 86 against Miami. (HINT: If you're going to use stats use the correct game)

So the board consensus is that Stoglin should take every shot. Basically the other four players are out there to set picks and get rebounds. And how many teams have won with that game plan? How many successful teams have one player take more than 30% of their teams shots? And the point that Greenburg made is that Stoglin is an immense talent. He'll win you games single-handedly but also lose games.
