  • i think this number of armed aggressors puts students and others in college park in danger. they need to deploy the national guard or something to protect the citizens from these guys.

  • They need to send in someone who the students respect. Every thinks pg county is a joke. People wouldn't mess around if the Navy Seals were around

  • Prince George's County Police District 1 Commander Maj. Robert Brewer said his officers were prepared, but he wasn't anticipating any problems like the department saw in post-game riots in 2010.

"I don't want to categorize it as high risk, but in the past there have been celebrations that have poured into the streets," Brewer said. "In previous years, there were fires, cruisers burned."

Bullshit, show me one instance where there was a cruiser burned. I'm pretty sure there's never been a car of any kind burned.

I felt like I should have issued an amber alert for myself, just in case

And there was rampant horse assault!

Oh wait, nevermind, that was just the blatant lie on the police report.

  • College Park is an absolute shit hole college town and once of the most unsafe campuses in the country because of it. Other than that everything is great.

  • there has got to be a way someone can just move our campus to Annapolis. it really can't be that hard.

  • Maryland should do what the University of Pennsylvania did and buy up the junk properties around campus and then develop them into something befitting a true college town. Start with the run down motels on Route 1 and the vacant lot that used to house Lasik's House of Beef. Demolish (or bun in a giant bonfire) that horrible 1970's era strip mall and build a town center there with shops, apartments, and...gasp...owner-occupied housing. At most major state universities, many of the faculty actually live near campus (which helps in recruiting them).

Have the university set up its own charter schools for College Park (since academics are probably not going to want their kids in the PG County schools) or give out grants for faculty to pay partial tuition at private schools. Maryland loves to brag about all of its friends in Annapolis and Washington, well leverage them to make some of this happen. You're telling me that Mike Miller, who is in the athletic hall of fame for some reason as well as being Pres of the MD Senate, can't get state money to rebuild College Park? or that Steny Hoyer can't slide an earmark (without calling it that of course) into a bill to totally redo Route 1?

Dan Mote actually talked about some of this when he first came here. He came from Berkely and was embarrassed by College Park. But nothing really happened.

  • They finally demolished the Starlight Inn. What the hell more do you want?!

They're "in the process" of doing this. They're calling it East Campus, and like the Purple Line, it's been in the planning stages for about 10 years now and isn't at all close to becomming a reality. They said something about actually breaking ground on the 1st phase within the next year, but it's not gonna happen and it's way too ambitious a project. They're not buying new property for it though, it's going on the space where Leonardtown and the DOTS parking lots and facilities stuff around there is. That whole area on the other side of Route 1 across from the main entrance, north of frat row.

Unless they can rezone the area into Montgomery County, it will still be junk. At the end of the day no matter how well you dress it, College Park will be in PG County. lol

I tried to follow that "process" and then gave up for the sake of my own sanity. Who knows how much of it will ever get built. But at least they are trying. Dealing with the morons that run the City of College Park should qualify someone for sainthood. I still remember when the Metro station opened and the city refused to let Shuttle-UM buses drive down Calvert Road (a ban that is apparently still in effect). The university is no better, remember the arguments against the Purple Line routing through campus?

I still think the biggest problem is the shopping center. The thing is a massive eyesore with some of the most valuable real estate near campus taken up by a large parking lot. The largest tenant, Rugged Warehouse, is some sort of discount clothing store that makes TJ Max look like Brooks Brothers. Then the city goes and builds a new parking garage with Ledo's on the first floor. Another waste of space. The parking garage is always empty and what could have been student or mixed-use housing right by campus is now wasted space. How about the old "Little Tavern" that now sits empty. You're telling me the city or state can't find some incentive to get that place redeveloped? Incredible.

  • I seriously wish they could just airlift the campus and move it up to Frederick. It's embarrassing when I take friends to games and show them "downtown College Park."

The #1 Liquor store that stands between the two brand new highrises pretty much epitomizes how the town of CP is run.

I really can't think of a worse place to put campus than in the middle of Route 1 in Prince George's County. Our founders didn't do it on purpose, but they failed us something awful by not being anywhere near the Potomac or the Chesapeake.

Can you imagine campus where National Harbor is or where the naval academy is? PERMABONOR.

we could drown RANGOON there too!

So I respond "Tell you what, I'll read Dreams of My Father if you read MEIN KAMPF"

  • The entire College Park regional area, that entire part of PG, really is a sad shithole. It's great to see these recent efforts to patch things up after decades of unmitigated decline, but honestly it would be a multi-generational project just to establish a minimally safe 2-mile radius around the center of campus.

Agreed completely that the campus should have been located elsewhere. Close to DC is great, but not in the state armpit of PG. The banks of the Potomac, sitting on a few hundreds acres of what eventually became the Glen Echo area, would have been a really good location and no farther out than College Park. The development of a town out there to the northwest could have centered on the school over the past 70 years, not on an endless progression of strip-mall bungalows serving low quality junk food and crap lodging to Route 1 travelers. The Glen Echo area, very different and more developed than the version we know, likely would avoid the cesspool fate of PG -- which by contrast would be almost exactly the same garbage it is now.

One negative: a "Potomac Park" campus eventually would have led to the acronym UMPP, which is about as bad as it gets. Surely there would have been a workaround though.

Barring that, a location on the Chesapeake. But there's little benefit to being near Baltimore, so you'd want to be far enough away to make a big campus into the center of everything for 30 miles around.

There are some fantastic houses back there, I've always thought. CP Woods (off Metzerott) has some great houses too.
