Do you think you'll ever see a player come play basketball at Maryland you love more than Juan? Do you think it's even possible? For me I don't think it is.

I would hope it's possible. Personally I think Jake Layman has alot of potential. Anyone who can put up a 20-20 every once in awhile is OK in my book. I hope he does well here.

I would have said no one would have eclipsed Len for me...
Maybe I have a short term memory bias, but Buck was the pinnacle for me until Len showed up and then it was Joe Smith until Juan showed up... And while I loved GV, he was too eratic at times to top Juan.... There always seem to be a changing of the guard and he is up there, but not sure I would never say never...

Juan had a lot of back story that made him special.
His parents' struggles with drugs and death made him the perfect person to put Bias's ghost to rest.
He was the right person at the right time. For Maryland Basketball he is the 'Chosen One.'
I think just because of his significance to the program he is in another stratosphere than like and love. He is venerated.

I think because I went to school at the same time as Juan, saw him at bad frat parties (those teams were full of a bunch of nerds, honestly), etc, my answer is no. They won our first title and I felt like I actually knew him. We'll have better players at Maryland, probably win additional titles, but I'll never love a player more than Juan. I'll probably also never love a team as much as that one.

Longer answer: Its not impossible, but its hard to imagine the circumstances. I mean, what can top taking us to our 1st championship as the best player in the country?

I would say Juan > Greivis personally but I can respect people who love Greivis more. Definitely not cringe-worthy.

I love Greivis more but it's pretty much only because our time at UMD overlapped and by that time I was, of course, a diehard fan, whereas I was only a casual fan during the Juan years. I could see me loving someone more than GV sometime down the road though. I don't think I'll ever love a player's personality more than GV's, but if someone with a great personality comes around and gives me a title or two, they could get the overall edge.

I have a hard time choosing between Juan and Len. I guess I will wuss out and say they are co-favorites in my book. GV is 1a.

I was 12 years old in 2002, I didn't understand a lot of what made Juan special at the time. I was 2 years behind GV as a student at MD(so I was a Fr and Soph for his Jr and Sr years), GV was a big part of my life for 2 years, not just somebody who was good at basketball that I rooted for when i watched his games on tv.

I think it's possible to love another player as much, but in a different way. It isn't ridiculous to care for both equally, depending on what really resonates with you.
I think people loved Juan for his embodiment of the University's character - the overlooked, underestimated guy that didn't have all the talent in the world, but overcame the odds by wanting it more than his highly touted peers. Everybody wants to be a Juan story - to overcome difficulty to reach the ultimate pinnacle of success in your world. There is something special about having to earn it every step of the way. He wasn't annointed a star like Jay Williams. He went out and took that status for himself.
People loved Greivis for his swagger and the passion he exuded for all things Maryland. He was the most vocal proponent of the Terps I can remember. After a few years of letdowns following our peak in 2002, he was a reminder of what the possibilities are for our program. The General made us believe again, if only for a moment, that we could go toe to toe with anybody.
Is it possible that we see another that reaches that level of fan adoration? Sure. But, we were very fortunate to have two players like that come through within the same decade of one another.

Juan really was a perfect storm of ability, backstory, personality, and accomplishments. He's a year older than me too, and i can't really see myself having the same amount of respect for another player the older I get.

I try not to place one era above another. I would say I liked Boom, Neal and like Stoglin every bit as much as I liked Juan. Not saying they were better, just that I enjoy/ed watching them play.

I'm too young to remember Bias or really understand what happened to our school in the wake of his death, but I am old enough to go to school right when we started getting out of the hole we were in (1994).
Because of when I started school (we were good but not great at basketball), I never really thought we'd ever win a title. But Juan changed that.
It’s Juan for me, and it isn't even close (Greivis is a distant second).
