Football Recruiting Updates (September)

  • Central Catholic (Perry Hills & Anthony Nixon) started the season off 1-0 with a hard fought win over Archbishop Wood.

Perry Hills 6-of-13, 122 yards, TD & six rushes, 71 yards, (long of 69)
Anthony Nixon: 4 rec., 75 yards, TD

Central Catholic escapes with narrow victory over talented Archbishop Wood team

MONROEVILLE, Pa. - There's something about the big stage of Pittsburgh Central Catholic's season openers and the performances of Damion Jones-Moore. The career 3,400-yard rusher torched Youngstown Ursuline for more than 200 yards in 2009, then ran for 110 more to open the Vikings' 2010 opener against eventual Ohio state champ Akron Buchtel. So 2011 figured to be no different,...

This is a pretty typical quiet period, with coaches and recruits more concerned with the games on the fields. Obviously a showing like we had on Monday, on a national stage, doesn't hurt at all.

Junior RB David Williams off to hot start

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    By Jared Shanker
    ESPN Recruiting

David Williams was third on West Catholic's (Pa.) running back depth chart last year, has never rushed for 1,000 yards and is only two games into his junior season but already has several offers.

In fact, before he took the first hand off of his junior campaign or stepped foot on Notre Dame's campus, the Fighting Irish were still comfortable enough to offer the Philadelphia back a scholarship.

"I was pretty excited," Williams said. "It caught me off guard. I was supposed to go visit but my flight got bumped. I figured they would wait longer and wouldn't offer me until I came down."

David Williams already has offers from Notre Dame, UConn, Maryland, Pitt, Rutgers, Temple and Virginia.

Williams has been off to a hot start this year. Though the Burrs sit at 0-2, it isn't because of a lack of production from Williams, who ran for 124 yards and a touchdown in the season opener. He followed that with a 206-yard performance against Archbishop Wood, a PIAA Class AAA semifinalist last year.

It is performances like those two that have a host of schools interested. Auburn, Oregon, California, Florida, Penn State and Vanderbilt have all sent him mail, including a multitude of others Williams couldn't remember off the top of his head.

In addition to the Irish, Connecticut, Maryland, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Temple and Virginia have all verbally offered the 6-foot-1, 190-pound back. Williams has visited all those schools with the exception of Virginia.

He camped at Rutgers this summer and was impressed by lead recruiter Brian Angelichio and the facilities, most notably the weight room.

"Coach Angelichio doesn't act like uptight coaches, he's real cool," Williams said. "I could talk to him about anything. We talked like every other week until the season came. Now we talk here and there on Facebook."

Rutgers' staff offered Williams seconds before he ran a drill.

"I was getting ready to run my 40, and [a coach] said that I'm going to be happy by the end of the day," Williams said.

Williams also made it down to College Park for Maryland's game against Miami (Fla.). Previously, Williams had only been to Temple games, and he said Byrd Stadium was on a completely different level.

And of course, he liked the uniforms and helmets.

"The fans were going wild, it was a full house. I was amazed," Williams said. "That was my first college game with an atmosphere for people going crazy."

Williams is also high on in-state Pittsburgh. Running backs coach Calvin Magee has built a solid relationship with Williams, and even coach Todd Graham has called Williams a few times. The only other head coach who has called Williams is Rutgers coach Greg Schiano.

Most of his conversations with Graham center around the changes Graham has made at Pitt and the run-based offense he is installing.

"It means a lot for the head coach to call," Williams said. "They are always busy and don't have time, so it shows how much they really care."

Williams said he doesn't have a favorite and has no plans to rush into a decision. Just because Notre Dame is the biggest brand name that has offered doesn't mean he will jump on it.

"I can't say it's my favorite because it's the biggest one," he said. "I've never been out there."

    Mike Farrell
    Rivals.com Football Recruiting

Does Maryland have a shot with in-state talent?

Which Don Bosco Prep prospect will be best in college?

And is Syracuse improving its presence in New Jersey?

These questions and more are addressed by Rivals.com analyst Mike Farrell in the Mid-Atlantic recruiting mailbag.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    More interest in Maryland

Maryland's recruiting class is not the most impressive at the moment, but it looks like it has made up a lot of ground with most of the top in-state talent since the big win over Miami. How realistic of a chance does it have with players like Stefon Diggs, Cyrus Jones, Wes Brown, Ronald Darby and Eddie Goldman?

    - Sebastian from Annapolis, Md.

Cyrus Jones has Maryland in his final three.
Maryland went into the season opening home game against Miami knowing that it was a fantastic opportunity to make a huge impression on the top in-state targets, many of whom the Terps were struggling with until that point. The primetime ESPN game on Labor Day night, the new uniforms, the loud atmosphere, the new coaching - it all created the perfect scenario for Maryland, and the staff took advantage of it by rounding up all of the top in-state talent.

With Diggs, Jones, Brown, Darby and Goldman all attending the game, along with a host of other top recruits, the Terrapins did enough on that Monday night to make up substantial amounts of ground with every player. Currently, I think Diggs has Maryland in his top three with Florida and Auburn, I think Jones has Maryland in his top three with Auburn and Alabama and I think Darby has Maryland in his top two with Notre Dame. Maryland is also running in the top two for Brown along with Miami while Goldman has not cut down his list as much, but Maryland is firmly entrenched in his top seven.

The victory over Miami also opened the eyes of several younger recruits, such as Kendall Fuller, Dorian O'Daniel and Jalen Tabor who were all equally impressed by what they saw from the Terrapins on Labor Day night. Getting into the mindset of the younger recruits is almost as important as it is with the class of 2012, because it continues to lay the foundation in the region for Maryland.

Aside from the Labor Day victory, another major reason for the recent recruiting upswing at Maryland is the hands-on approach that has been taken by new coach Randy Edsall. Edsall was not necessarily known as a hands-on recruiter while at Connecticut and neither was former coach Ralph Friedgen during his stint at Maryland. This new approach is being very well received by recruits and it was important for Diggs, Jones, Darby, Brown, Fuller, O'Daniel and others to see Edsall on hand this past weekend at the Patriot Classic. But while all of this positive press is obviously great, the next step for Maryland is to actually reel in one of these big fish, as that will create a stir among the rest of the top in-state talent.

Dont worry Cyrus Jones is much much better. Jones says Marylands is in his top 3. i am not saying 100% we get him, But i think he fits this spread offense shake and bake type Wideout than Aj i think.

I wasn't overly worrying, and I'd love to get Jones...and keep the other stud locals at home, too.

  • North Florida Christian linebacker Dallas Griffiths plans on an official visit to Maryland. His top 3 schools are Maryland, Georgia Tech, and South Florida. Griffiths is overshadowed by his teammate, Travis Blanks, but he's a solid linebacker prospect who can contribute early in his career. You can check some of his highlight here, 2nd prospect down.

He looks pretty darn good in that video (at least considering its a one game highlight video not a season highlight video). I saw video of him at a combine on youtube too. He is pretty fast (straightline speed wise) and pretty physical. I cannot tell, he may be a little stiff in the hips, but overall a very solid prospect. Wuj was pretty good despite being stiff and he didn't have this guys straightline speed

  • Liddell was a good prospect on the field, but he had some off the issues that I think made our staff back off. Hes talented enough though, that even with off the field issues he end up in a BCS Conference (wouldn't be surprised if James Franklin landed him at Vandy).

Yeah lucy for the Terps Maryladn is locked at wideout position this year and next year. we are in it with Diggs, Brown, Cyrus, and some 2013 local wideouts so i am good with wherewe are focusing our recruiting attention too right now. Diggs says Umd, Gators and Auburn are his top 3, Marylands offense is the only spread offense i think in this top 3. and We have Danny who is a top Qb and we throw the ball like 40-45 times a game so Diggs and Cyrus should love that.

And Wes Brown will like that because he will have 18 wheeler type lanes to rushinto with all the space the spread opens up for RBs. We just need to lock in on Darby too and Spence and finish the season on a high note. Funny Enough in my season prediction 4 months ago, I said we woul dhave an early loss, and then strom through the season and finish really strong, So i am hoping that still happens, i cant help it i also have a positive outlook on life , and Terps basketball and football. Lets go Terps.

  • Recruiting Report has an article up about Terps commit Stefan Houston. Its good to see that Edsall & Co. are recruiting athletes on both sides of the ball. Hopefully Houston is closer to the 6'4" that has been listed prior, instead of 6'2" talked about here.

"On the offensive side of the ball, Houston is a big-play wide receiver who currently leads Clarksburg’s league in receptions (21) and receiving yards (414). Houston, who runs a 4.39 40, has caught five touchdown passes and also carried the ball 19 times for 106 yards."
