Football Recruiting Updates (August)

  • Maryland received 5 new football commits in the month of July, raising the total to 15 for the 2012 recruiting cycle.

    Shawn Petty - 6' 3", 230 lbs, LB, Maryland

Petty is an under the radar type of recruit who is not yet ranked on most of the sites. Shawn has played mostly QB in high school after getting hurt playing DE during his junior season. Maryland was his first D1 offer and part of that appears to be because he missed much of the camp season playing QB for one of the nations top 7-on-7 teams. The Terps recruited him at LB and it will be interesting to see what he can do when he is concentrating just on defense.

    P.J. Gallo - 6' 4", 225 lbs, TE, Pennsylvania

Gallo (3-star) is one of the top tight ends in the country, ranked #21 by Scout and #27 by ESPN. PJ had offers from over 10 BCS schools including UNC, WV and PITT.

    Anthony Nixon - 6' 1", 185 lbs, DB, Pennsylvania

Nixon is 2/3 star prospect recruited to play safety at Maryland, his only other D1 offer was from PITT. Nixon is also a very talented WR in high school and is Terp commit Perry Hills favorite target. He was named to the 2010 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Fabulous 22 team.

    Amba Etta-Tawo - 6' 3", 175 lbs, WR, Georgia

Amba Etta-Tawo, a 3-star WR from Georgia, picked the Terrapins over Virginia out of around 10 football scholarship offers. Also a member of the McEachern track and field team, he captured the Region 4AAAAA title in the 200-meter dash this past season after clocking in at 22.12 seconds. He was also second in the 100 dash (10.98) and helped the 400 relay team win the Region 4AAAAA title and place second at the Class AAAAA state meet."

    Avery Thompson - 6' 3", 195 lbs, OLB, Virginia

Thompson is a very intriguing LB prospect at 6' 3", 195 lbs, and he ran a 4.36 forty at that Best of the 757 combine. ESPN has him ranked as the #49 ILB prospect in the class, and even with that size and speed, Maryland was his first D1 offer.

  • Rivals has updated many of its State-by-State Preseason rankings. Here is where the Maryland commits stand so far.

    Maryland
    #8 - Mike Madaras
    #14 - Roman Braglio
    #24 - Joe Riddle

    Pennsylvania
    #28 - PJ Gallo
    #32 - Brock Dean
    #38 - Anthony Nixon

    South Carolina
    #26 - Caleb Rowe

  • Not sure why Nixon would be slotted at Safety. In his video (actually it was Hills' QB video) he made numerous acrobatic catches that few WR's are capable of. So much for the "DB's are former WR's with bad hands" theory.

  • Just 3 weeks ago WR Eugene Lewis released a Top 5 which included Maryland. 247Sports even had an article up claiming that Lewis was a big fan of Randy Edsall. Apparently Lewis' interest in Maryland has changed. He is down to a top 3 of Penn State (#1), Virginia and Virginia Tech.

Positive spin: Maybe Lewis sees that we've already signed 3 good WRs, and are still in the running for Diggs?

Negative spin: Maybe Lewis, a 4*, didn't think he'd fit it with our WR group of 2*s?

Has there been any news with where we stand with him? Wasn't his father a Terp?

I like our 2 WR so far, AJ Liddell and Amba Etta-Tawo are both 6' 3" and had a solid number of BCS offers. The only service that claims to have seen Liddell in person yet is ESPN and they rate him a 79 (0.5 away from a 4-star). Etta-Tawo is an absolute burner that is also (according to his coach) a hell of a blocker.

Don't forget Malcolm Culmer. Or is he being recruted as a DB?

You seem pretty well plugged in, SouthPaw. Thoughts on Culmer along with the other two?

And how come a guy who's "an absolute burner and a hell of a blocker" is only a **: questionable hands? Too much "under the radar?" Just seems that a guy like this should not be a **.

  • I am a huge fan of Lidell... if you get the time, watch his video, i am incredibly impressed.... probably my favorite non-Madaras recruit in this class...

Yes, culmer is going to be a slot receiver.

I am pretty sure ESPN rounds up which is why 79.5 is a four star (it rounds up to 80), so he could be anyway from a 78.5 to 79.49, they just round up and down so you only see a whole number.

I like Liddell too. Roman Braglio is also a favorite. Nick Bingham is really quick too, though like Sal Conaboy he looks like he'll take a couple years to develop as he'll come in like the 255 or 260 range.

  • Scout updated their Top 100 players in the East (NY, MD, VA, DC, PA, NJ, MA, DE) list and Maryland has 5 of them so far. Terp target Noah Spence is #1

    #34 - Mike Madaras
    #63 - Roman Braglio
    #73 - Brock Dean
    #74 - PJ Gallo
    #90 - Perry Hills

  • I stand corrected. It sounds like Maryland did recruit Malcolm Culmer to play WR.

"While Culmer was recruited by several programs – included Illinois – as a cornerback, Lawrence said he expects Culmer to start out at receiver at Maryland. Lawrence isn’t quite sure how the Terps plan to utilize Culmer, but he’s “the type of kid that can probably play in any offense you put him in.”

  • Scout.com has also updated their star ratings recently. Brock Dean is now a 3-star (OLB #54) and Anthony Nixon is also a 3-star (S #68).

  • Some additional information on Trey Edmunds...

"6’2″, 200-pound rising senior Trey Edmunds will play football and attend college in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The only question remaining is where. He’ll answer that question tomorrow at a 1 p.m. press conference at his high school. The finalists are Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia and Virginia Tech."

He sounds like just the type of player that Edsall is going after right now...

"Trey is a multi-sport athlete at Dan River, playing varsity basketball and running indoor and outdoor track in addition to football. He gets the job done in the classroom as well, carrying a 3.5 GPA."

  • I don't pretend to know. That said, he could have seen how many underclassmen OL Terps have, vs. Georgia, who will be losing a lot of seniors, though he sounds good enough to play anywhere he goes. Sounds like a good kid; sorry we couldn't get him.

  • Maryland has made the Top 4 for 4-star offensive guard DJ Reader, who would like to be a 2-sport athlete in college...

OL D.J. Reader wants to play two sports
Grimsley (Greensboro, N.C.) three-star prospect D.J. Reader has a request for colleges: He wants to play both football and baseball in college. That may not sound unusual, but consider who it is coming from. Reader isn't a quarterback, wide receiver or defensive back. He's an offensive guard. A 6-foot-3, 306-pound offensive guard. But he can pitch a baseball. He can hit one, too. And he's good at both.

  • DJ READER is not the equiv. of Eddie Goldman imho. Dj being faster with as much power is a better prospect playing multiple positions well.

SouthPaw says he's a 4*. The linked UNC piece says he's a 3*. And SWAGGERTERP
says he's a better prospect the Goldman?!! WOW! Some real differences of opinion here.
That said, RE said he likes two sport athletes, so sounds like he'd be a great get in any event.
