Florida State could be flirting with SEC

this logic has kind of been debunked a couple times. the legislature pressed to get VT in the ACC because VT would have been left holding a bag of dicks in the weakened Big East. if VT moved to the SEC, they would be taking a step up, and UVA would still be in good shape in the ACC. it's a completely different set of situations, and there wouldn't need to be the legislative push.

RDurr, for precisely the reverse reason, this time to save UVa. In short, you think that UVa would still be "in good shape in the ACC." That is assuming that VT leaving the ACC isn't part of a bigger exodus that rips up the ACC. In this case, I would suspect that Richmond wouldn't want UVa left in the dust of a BoD conference.

  • Look if FSU and Clemson leave the ACC, we need to get out. The replacement teams are a joke, ECU? More North Carolina Schools? come on. I say we try to join the Big Ten, maybe with some other regional teams (VT, WVU, Pitt). The ACC implodes with out FSU.

  • I think if at the end of the day if the ripple effect happens the remaining ACC schools and the Big East football schools end up merging one way or another for about a 14 team league. While not ideal for the teams that are left in both it is a softer landing that it could be and better than what Va Tech thought they were looking at if they were left behind in '04. The Big East ended up being fortunate that the schools they brought in after that ended up being decent at least. In this situation said schools may end up staying at the big boy table for the time being, especially since the Big 12 will be gone.

Although losing FSU would hurt, isn't that kind of an over-reaction? Some would say the ACC was a pretty damn good conference before FSU came along. Granted, times change, but they're not exactly the core team that we all revolve around.

In football? I don't think anyone would say it was a pretty damn good conference before FSU. It was an earlier version of today's Big East, but no one knew enough or was connected to the internet to laugh at the ACC as we do the BE today.

    Your view is myopic, Magoo.
Somehow, I don't think Jim Tatum, Jerry Claiborne or Bobby Ross would agree with you - and those are just Terp coaches. And "no one knew enough or was connected to the internet to laugh at the ACC"? What a naive remark. Do you really think that there weren't sophisticated football fans before the internet?

I was responding to the poster who said the ACC would "implode" without FSU. Do you agree with that overheated opinion? I certainly don't. After all, the ACC didn't collapse when FSU had suck seasons...

While some of what you say is true, keep this in mind: the SEC has won more national football championships the last 5 years than the ACC has ever - 4.5.

  • Swafford indicates ACC schools staying put

In response to a number of requests for comment, below is a quote from from ACC Commissioner John Swofford that has been circulated regarding the ACC and its membership:

"As I've said previously, we'll continue to be mindful of the collegiate landscape and what's best for the ACC and its member institutions. With that said, I've received no indication from any of our 12 Presidents that they have any intention of being affiliated with any conference other than the ACC."

He's really not saying much there. The sec stance is that they have to get A&M in first to really deliberate on a 14th school.

I was the happiest fan ever when we won 3 stright acc titles in the 80's. However, that still didn't put us anywhere near the national title picture. The acc was a second tier league, no doubt. Clemson in 82 and GT (88?) weren't dynasties.

FSU came in and immediately legitgimized it.

It seams like all sides always have their party line, indicating that it is not happening. Then all of a sudden it happens.

The school changing conferences says "no offer". The Pres. says, "no discussions" with conference x.

All the negotiations are done behind the scenes. Then, in a span of like 5 minutes, the Pres. get's the call, the offer is made, it is accepted, and all parties are notified.

So I guess it means that the big conference shake-up may be happening, no matter what we hear to the contrary. But Monday is a real deadline

If there is such a thing as premier leagues, the SEC and the Big 10 are certainly there. After that, with ever-changing waves of success over the years, there are other strong leagues. Myself, I see the ACC as in that place, equal to, say, the Pac-10 or the SWC. My view, of course is highly subjective - like everybody else's.

You left out the rest of the quote:

"And we will maintain for the long term, our ongoing relationships with Raycom sports, producers of the finest in crowd scene shots during games, as well as the best in standard definition transmission. Also, Bojangles, a fine restaurant chain which is thinking seriously of going national, by building their first restaurant outside of North Carolina by the year 2013."
