Those fucking clowns probably had no idea who Johnny was. .

I guarantee this. So sad how people have no appreciation for the history of this program.

Activity fee is not the same as athletic fee. Full time undergrads pay 198.77 for the athletic fee. We pay 31.52 for the activity fee.

Whatever the name is, my point was that most of those fees go towards the gyms anyways

Please try to not hate on me, but as a senior who has been watching Maryland basketball for over a decade, and been going to games for over 8 years, it was a little hard for me to go tonight when this is the worst season we've had in years. (I'm also a diehard Redskins, Caps and Orioles fan. Read the signature.) Considering I have gone to more games than I can remember, pouring an enormous amount of time into waiting in line and at the games I can understand why seniors may not show up (Freshmen and Sophomores are a sad result of losing in my opinion). As seniors we've seen great Maryland seasons in both football and basketball and yet, in both sports some of the worst seasons this school will ever have to see (especially the two worst football seasons EVER). It has been VERY hard to get myself to football games this season and I have sadly gone to basketball games this year alone, because it just doesn't have the same interest to many people. I will always be a diehard Maryland supporter, but sadly students will not show up if we are not winning. Once I graduate I'm sure i will not miss a game, because it will remind me of what it was like to be in college.

Nope. You get down-voted you senior.

I skipped a few games when I was a student because I was feeling lazy or couldn't get anyone to go with me. And I regret every single on of those games now. You're getting free tickets to maryland basketball. Gary fought to give students the seats where they are, and they are great seats. Don't waste the opportunity you've been given. When you graduate the free tickets go away, the seats get worse, and life makes it tougher to go to the games.

I'm still pissed at myself for missing our drubbing of UNC in 2003 I believe (?) even though I was dog sh!t sick.

OK, so I get that this entire thread as well as what I am about to add is the empitome of beating a dead horse, but as long as we are bitching about the crowd I think that the people streaming out of the arena with 30 seconds left in a one possession game deserve, at least, an honorable mention. I sit in section 123 and there were people bolting past me like the building was on fire. I'll never understand that.

Been going on since the Terps played in Cole. I'll never understand it.

It's extra revenue plus there was no alumni section that looked like the wall last night, even in the upper sections.

Mostly because the wall/student section is GA seating, and everywhere else is reserved, so it does not look as bad.

The listed attendance was 12,871. 5000 short of a sellout, and that does not even account for the no-shows.

  • attending games on campus as an undergrad is one of the greatest experiences you'll ever have. I remember walking back from games at Cole and feeling sorry for my friends that attended schools w/o big time basketball because they didn't have that.

We essentially sell 100% of the student tickets to the University in exchange for some hefty student activity fees. It's a huge revenue line item for the Athletic Dept and a very good deal for them (negotiated by our former AD). We're not going to decrease student tickets as that would give them leverage to reduce the student activity fees and we need that revenue.

When I was at UM, I looked at the games as a "free" chance to see bigtime basketball in an amazing atmosphere. I will always remember those freezing cold nights in the hot-as-hell Cole, the crowd going nuts. I remember walking back to my dorm and wondering about the dorks in the 24-hour room and why they would ever want to miss that. What an amazing experience.

I don't care what anyone says, something was lost when they moved to Comcast. The location isn't the greatest (though necessary) and building has a cold, antiseptic feel, unlike other arenas built in the era. Sure, a good team will get th teams back, but I have to think there is something bigger going on. It's a shame, too.

  • you used to walk out of Cole all sweaty and it would immediately freeze up when you walked outside -- Flops called it Cole-sicles.

Totally agree we lost a lot when we moved buildings. It was a necessary move but it's a different feel. I still don't think the students get a pass on this however and if we still played in Cole we'd have similar issues.

I've learned through NYCTerp05's younger brother it's not "cool" to attend games anymore. Kids have watch parties for bigger games, the games are all on TV (back in the day we didn't have cable in the dorms so you almost had to attend to watch).

Time for an on-campus blackout of games on TV then if thats what it takes. NFL style.

  • Boo hoo - I'm a die hard but this is our worst season in years so I'm not going to games anymore.

I went to every one of Bob Wade's home games as a student. Students today have no idea how good they have it right now.

    Pathetic.

  • The desire to watch sports on TV instead of live at the arena baffles me. There is no sport ever where it's better to watch on TV, especially for a game of magnitude.

  • we're two years removed from a regular season ACC championship team. A 21 year old today was 13 when we won our ACC tourney in 2004 and 11 when we won the natty. Amazingly we filled Cole in the 90's when we were a few years removed from 2-14 and probation.

  • I remember 10 days after Gone in 56 Seconds, in a season that we went to a Final Four, the student section being nearly empty for Valentine'sDay Massacre against FSU because we were on a losing streak.

yeah well 2nd round exits are very forgettable to the casual fan which most students would fall under

I know we should applaud the students who do show up but can someone tell them a "[team] sucks" chant while we're losing to said team is not the brightest idea.

  • Times are different people. I started going to games with my parents in the 70's. Attended Maryland in the 80's. Bought my first season tickets the year before Gary came. It was ingrained in me to ATTEND games. Why..because they were not on TV!!

Now its just easier for people to watch the games at home or in a bar. Sometimes even more enjoyable. This along with the ridiculous academic acceptance decisions the University makes leads to less attendance by students. Maryland is a state university and highly qualified Maryland high school students are not getting accepted, or are delayed acceptance until spring semester so that some out of state jerkoff that didn't grow up on Maryland sports gets accepted for more tuition money. Its disgraceful, but thats the world we live in now.

Doing my part to ensure one of those 2012 out of state freshman is all in on Terps sports. He's been going across the river to games as long as he can remember and has already crashed the student section this season. :)

WAT? Yes, lets not allow smart out of state kids into Maryland. Tell me more about your great idea.

okay, if going to post about admissions at least know the process: Out of state students do not compete with in-state students. We have a 70/30 split where the school can only have 30% of its enrollment be from out of state. We cannot replace in-state students with out of stater just because we want to, our mandate from the state won't allow.

    goterpss

  • But we could replace some of the out of state students with in state students who are still highly qualified but don't get in. I think that's what he was going for.
