"Karl Hess is one of the best on-court officials in college basketball, but the ACC has established a game management protocol, which allows the opportunity to potentially diffuse any situations before they reach the level of ejection," ACC commissioner John Swofford said in the statement. "His reprimand is a result of a failure to follow that protocol.
"We have to depend on our officials and their judgments; and the explanation from Karl Hess regarding this matter has been shared with the ACC and N.C. State University."
In an email sent by ACC associate commissioner for men's basketball Karl Hicks to N.C. State executive senior associate athletic director Chris Kingston on Monday night, the league said Corchiani and Gugliotta weren't ejected for anything that they said.
"According to Hess, `They were ejected for excessive demonstration on several calls as they came right up to the scorer's table. The policeman at the end of the FSU bench was warned that their continual excessive demonstration that incited the crowd would result in ejection'," the email states.
A- Karl Hess is one of the best officials? Are you kidding me? (He's the ref that delayed our game to go to a replay in the BC game) He needs to retire.
B-Ejected for excessive demonstration? Is this an excuse for Karl Hess or any other ref to throw out anybody because they exhibit some anger at the lousy calls?
reprimand? i'd like to give him a medal.
Considering everyone considers the ACC so Carolinacentric, this can't be viewed as a bad thing.
Seriously, f*ck the ACC.
At least they're consistent, though. The refs NEVER put up with fans getting too close to the action on the court.
Personally, I find pleasure in any negative press / PR directed toward NC Sate.
Karl Hess is one of the best ACC officials. That says more about the ACC than it does Karl but there's a reason Karl works 6-7 days a week and it's not because nobody else is willing to. Of course Karl's also a diva which annoys the shit out of a lot of fans, including myself.
This is what it's more about than anything else. Hess is one of those refs that likes that everyone knows who he is and that he has a reputation. He wants to be a part of the show.
Speaking of preening douche refs, whatever happened to Teddy Valentine?
Looks like primarily B10/SEC now, with a few ACC games here & there.
The ultimate source of stats and news for college basketball fans
Jamie Luckie is Hess' younger look alike under study. He's going to be the idiot ref that everyone hates for the next 20 years.
My personal most hated ACC ref of all time is Duke Edsall for not killing his brother when they were kids.
Wasn't Valetine the REF that Bobby Knight stomped straight to after getting ejected and then turned at the last minute and walked off the court?
Valentine's been ruining mostly Big 10 games recently. Saw him blow like 4 calls in 3 minutes during the Ohio State/Michigan game last weekend.
The best is that Dan Dakich does a lot of Big 10 games now, and he just destroyed Valentine on like 2-3 occasions during the Ohio State/Michigan State game a couple weeks back for making phantom calls and all his theatrics. Dakich seems like a guy that will wear on me after a while, but for now his brutal honesty is pretty funny.

Hess has been a major douche and pain in UMD's but for many years. I think he was the ref who absolutely f'd us in the semis in Minny in 01. Terps roared out to a 22 point lead over dook. K called a time out and spent all of it talking to the zebras. After that, we never got a call, and were hit with phantom calls, flops, you-name-it. An Arizona fan sitting in front of me turned around and said, wow, you guys are really getting screwed by the refs. No sh*t. Thanks Hess.

WTF is this?
executive senior associate athletic director
So, that means there are enough assoc. ADs that there are multiple senior assoc. ADs and he is the executive senior assoc. ADs over top of the others?
Is that a Yow thing or do all ADs go that far with titles?
