When Miami (of Florida) joined the ACC and started coming around calling themselves "UM" I was quick to shoot them down in my typical cranky OWG appeal-to-tradition fashion. Maryland has always been "UM" in the conference, held seniority as a charter member, and for Miami (of Florida) to come in and try to steal our initials was, to me, as ridiculous as FSU coming in and calling itself "State" or VPI calling itself "Tech". (and please, "VT" means Vermont, not the Virginia Polytechnic Institute)
In 2014 we'll be in a conference that already has its "UM" established in Ann Arbor. By my own reasoning our UM will have to go. For most it won't matter; we've become "UMd" to most people for some reason anyway.
But still. Maybe it would be fun to tweak the Wolverine fans a little by trying to assert our UMness just a little at halftime, before they proceed to beat us 77-2.
Parenthetically (and seriously), I'm actually looking forward to a possible hoops rivalry with Michigan. If it needs help getting started, we just have to pull out film of them beating us in the NCAA Tournament (was that the Fab Five team?).
I absolutely plan to refer to ourselves as UM to piss off Michigan fans.
The band will keep doing that UM formation, as well as the block M that looks just like Michigan's M.
I've always thought of us as UMD. As long as nobody says "UMCP" I don't care.
And VT is definitely Virginia Tech not Vermont when you're talking about any sport other than hockey.

yikes-looks like the band is spelling wm?
Maybe it's the William + Mary band?
Obvi an old photo, too. Dig the 50YL crotch-flag.
We will be known as UM3, not UMd. Minnesota has seniority on us as well.
I'm going with UM cubed, then. (Yeah, I know it's mathematically incorrect ...)
It was the Fab Fife Team.
Fab 4 (minus Webber) + Dugan Fife
We were a state first so we have seniority.
why on earth
I personally never use "UM" or any variant. I either say "maryland" or "university of maryland". I assume the listener will assume college park.
LOL We gave up all rights to be called "UM" when we sold our souls to the B1G. There's no going back now....
This really is the most OWG thread ever.
Minnesota refers to themselves as the U. So don't need to worry about that one (at least to Minnesotans).
Why does that matter for calling us UMD? The Minnesota in the Big Ten is Twin Cities, not Duluth.
It's their Latin name. Universitas Viridis Montis. University of the Mountains.

Nope, that's us. Its in mighty sound's pregame, along with the m you mentioned as well.
It's a cursive lowercase u and an m
Like this logo
University of the Green Mountains. Vermont is the Green Mountain State.
I fully intend on cremesicle calling us 'ryland after our move to the Big Ten.
"It's just so hard," Greivis said. "It's my heart, my love. Maryland made me who I am."
Plus UVM was founded before the postal service assigned the 2 letter abbreviation for the state of Vermont
So in reality, USPS got it wrong
WTF? Nobody owns the right to initials. There happens to be several schools whose initials are UM and we are one of them. My favorite gameday hat is a red het with a big black M on the front of it. I'm not going to stop wearing it because Michigan fans wear a blue hat with a yellow M. This "who is the real UM" discussion is ridiculous.
