$80M for a practice football facility when when the AD is 80M in the hole?! Not happening.
Building/living in the DC area is more expensive than building/living in the Detroit area. You do realize that, right? LOL at major economic center for SE Michigan. Was that supposed to be an impressive fact or something? What's with the fat pig who wrote that Post article?
I got the shotgun. You got the briefcase. It's all in the game though, right?
Wow. This is NOT roomy!
Who knew she was a Kansas U grad? Probably an illegitimate daughter of Coach Mangino. Here she is with her Dad
I think we are in too deep to replace Byrd. Once the Tyser Towers and Gosset Field House were built we were stuck.
Before this a decision could have been made to replace Byrd.
The cost to demolition Byrd would be huge.
I think Byrd needs a renovation. I would put in bench seats and add some new seats, and give Byrd a more modern appearance.
is is 100% a indoor facility will be built?
I was also thinking they can put some big ass banners down the back side of the stadium in between the pillars. That could help take away from the obscene amount of concrete.
Likewise, repaint the faded M in the stands and put something cool on the face of the parking garage.
Crazy part is I feel like I could live with the old horseshoe if it was just that. How does a school that produces great architects create such a disjointed eyesore?
HATE This. I feel like Loh is smarter than this, and it definitely sounds like some B1G arm twisting to me
Since when does Maryland produce great architects?
I don't see any Principals at HOK with Maryland degrees. (Gossett Fieldhouse)
I don't see anyone at Heery International with Maryland degrees. (Tyser Tower Renovation)
I can't find who the architect was that did the Byrd Expansion in 1994. Whoever it was got overpaid.
Maybe we should be glad no Maryland architects were involved.
I am amused at what some people are posting about the areas outside of Detroit, and how "outside" seems to be ignored.
AA is what most colleges dream of their surrounding neighborhoods being like.
If by suburb you mean 40 miles away?
That's kinda like saying Baltimore is a suburb of DC.
I think the upper deck addition needs to be improved. It looks tacky. If you put in individual seats it would help the appearance and ad comfort.
parts of the stadium look nice and others do not. I think an moderate overhaul on Byrd would make a huge difference, Also, Cole is sort of an eye sore.
The bigger eyesore to me are those metal "slabs" on the parking deck. I've posted before that hanging Maryland flags or pictures of former Terp greats on them for game day would be a cheapish idea which I think would help a lot. Could get a bunch of different ones and rotate them.
Ann Arbor is a suburb of Detroit.
In the Campus Master Plan, the new Varsity Team House and Indoor Practice Facility are planned for 128,100 GSF, for the 2021-2030 planning phase. Also in there is 7,500 GSF addition to Gossett during the same time period. Pretty large construction projects; could support the $50-80 million estimate. Oregon's Football Performance Center is 145,000 square feet.
PS - Also note the 12,000-18,000 seat Ludwig upgrades.
My first thought when I saw this article was this is terrible timing on Loh's part. He should NOT be talking about spending a boat load of money, which OBTW he doesn't have, on Athletic Facilities until after the ACC law suit(s) have been settled. A major part of the leverage we have is the notion that the $50MM+ Exit Fee would further cripple an already bankrupt Atletic Department.
Could this announcement not have been delayed for a few months? WTF was he thinking?
We won the solar decathlon twice in the last five yrs. We're doing something right.

well, i would have chalked that one up to the success of our engineering programs but I do stand corrected based on this quote from that article:
"Panels of experts judge the competing entries on ten dimensions, and the Terps came in first overall, and placed first in Architecture, Energy Balance and Hot Water."
This has been a pretty recent trend though. Other than local firms I don't see many Maryland Architecture grads owning or becoming principals at the bigger architecture firms, at least not the ones getting work at U of MD.
Generally Maryland Architecture never makes any top 25 lists though.
I do think Maryland needs to seek out local design firms from Baltimore and DC, and they haven't been. I moved out of the area a decade ago but I'd like to see Ayers Saint Gross and the like get the majority of Maryland projects, because A. they do good design and B. there are a lot of maryland grads there and other local firms. I know HOK has a local office but i doubt the local office did much more than construction phase services, if that.
HOK is supposed to be the hotshot stadium group but I'm not really impressed by the Tyser expansion. But budget drives everything, including design but the mistakes made over the last 2 decades on Byrd stadium are just mind boggling.
If someone donates the money for some purpose, that's what they're going to use it for. If person x gives UMD 50 million dollars and tells them to build an indoor practice facility, that's what's going to happen, regardless of the other financial problems at the university. Also, since the ACC has already withheld 15 million dollars from UMD, the most the exit fee is now is 35 million. You can't count that 15 million against Maryland twice.
we're broke and we stink.
we have madam flora though.
Yes agreed, but these areas can be addressed, Cole needs some paint.
We need to make Byrd more pleasing to he eye, asthetics.
Our Colors are red, white, black and gold and I think the Maryland State Flag is great.
I just wish we get some chair style seats, I hate thiose benchs, The seats could be painted in way that looks great.
Loh lent the Athletic Dept $20 Million from PARKING and DINING Fees in order to cover themselves during this ACC suit since revenue's being witheld. That's money that's being taken DIRECTLY from ALL students to cover AD shortcomings. Now you want to build a $70 Million PRACTICE facility?
