Sports-wise, best and worst 4 year spans to go to Maryland?

  • I went to Maryland during 1994-1998 and though our football team wasn't good, it was exciting to watch the men's bb team claw back to being successful. I (and many friends) slept many nights on the cold, hard Cole floor to get tickets. Still, despite my own good time, I'd guess the period from 1999-2003 or so was among the best periods of time in recent history.

  • 08-12 was ok for me. I had 2 years of GV and 2 bowl games(granted Humanitarian and Military are about as bad as it gets).

  • I can vouch for this. Revenue sports were the worst, but the non-revenue were very good to great, soccer, track, wrestling, lacrosse, forgot how good baseball was, even though I had a friend on the team.

    I remember a road game against the road leveling OK Sooners. If my HS had played OU, the result would have been the same.

    Thank God for Jerry Claiborne (FB) and Lefty (BB). Jim Kehoe ran a pretty good program, how did it go so sideways ?

  • 90-94. At least bball was on upswing.

    I think we appreciated the later success so much more though after living through such down times. Hell, we weren't even on TV due to sanctions!!!

  • Just for fun, I took a look at the best combined winning percentage for football and men's basketball over each four-year span. Obviously it doesn't fully take into account stuff like winning championships and big bowl games, but it's still kinda interesting.

    1973-1977 was the winner, with a .778 combined winning percentage. The golden years of Claiborne+Driesell were probably a fun time to be on campus.

    1898-1902 was technically the loser, with a .275 winning percentage, but basketball didn't exist then. The worst football+basketball years were 1940-1944 (.325).

    The full list might be a little long to post here, but eh, fuck it:

  • 97-02....rough start but...

    All-expenses-paid trip to Miami for the Orange Bowl

    Courtside for every ACC & NCAA Tournament game from 99 through the National Championship (and Drew gave me his hat that they gave him on the court after the game)

    Yeah...being in the band at that time had its advantages!

  • The last two years have felt like four.

  • But those were probably good years to be a UM student, given the most likely alternative activity at the time.

  • multiple awards

    '73-'76 might win in for me, even though I was here 2001-05 and the 2001-2004 period was pretty awesome in itself.

    73-76:

    FB - four very good seasons, last one finishing 11-1, lost three bowls but 36 wins in four years ties us with 2000-2003. Better win % than 2000-2003; 3 top 25 finishes and 1 top 10 finish.

    BB - four great seasons, two Elite Eights, probably the 2nd best team in the nation (but missed the tourney due to a very silly rule), 92 total wins, and a better win % than any other four-year span (as far as I can tell). 1 top 15 finish and 3 top 10 finishes.

  • Strictly from a winning percentage standpoint, 1973-1977 was actually third-best, basketball-wise. 1971-1975 was best. The top five:

    [1971-1975] => 0.80459770114943
    [1972-1976] => 0.8
    [1973-1977] => 0.78571428571429
    [1998-2002] => 0.78014184397163
    [1999-2003] => 0.7463768115942

  • I was 2000-04.

    Both Final Fours, the Natty and the incredible 2004 ACC tourney run.

    Only three double digit win seasons for football since 1976, and the 2001 ACC title.

    Don't think that can be beat.

  • I was there 2002-2006. Not terrible by any means, but disappointing given what happened the previous couple of years. Basketball was good freshman year and we did manage to win the ACC tourney my soph year, but then it was all downhill. The football team was really good my first couple of years but then also started to slip. At least I got to see us finally beat FSU and some great MD-Duke bball battles.

  • Was there for the same period, came in 2003. Other than the ACC championship, that FSU game, and some Duke/UNC bball wins, revenue sports were pretty lackluster. One of those years we had the three losses to Clemson and ended our tourney streak. We won the soccer championship my sophomore year, I believe.

    My senior year was bright with the Strawberry-Jones class getting things together, but that tourney loss to Butler was a heartbreaker.

  • Wow, that's extremely cool. Were you doing some kind of broadcasting?

    ETA: Duh, reading comprehension. You already explained...
