Rumblings about UMD baseball coach Erik Bakich and Michigan. Sources say they've offered 400k+. And per @KendallRogersPG, deal may be close.
For 3x+ the salary it does.
Any chance Eric Milton takes over? Nebraska did hire Darin Erstad.
If 400k is anything close to true, adios.
"Maryland football: Where everybody gets hurt and the starting left tackle has an existential crisis."
ugw mentioned somebody currently on staff being a good candidate to take over. I'd like to think we still have a chance to keep Bakich. 400k is a lot but I still think his ultimate goal is a top tier SEC or ACC program and I'm not sure starting over in a region of the country he's unfamiliar with is the best, or quickest, way to achieve that.
400k is a lot for a college baseball coach though.
Holy hell if they offered $400k. That's probably almost twice as much as Mike Fox makes, which says a lot about how little we pay him compared to the market and how loyal he's been to the school.
I love the sport of baseball as much as the next guy. But Jesus Christ it is so apparent that Maryland will never, ever be able to field a team that would sniff an ACC championship, let alone do it consistently, let alone make it to Omaha.
There is not enough money, period. That's the only reason. It's not about talent in the state or the region, it's not about the school or campus, it's not about the conference, it's not about the weather. It's only about the fact that there will never be enough money. I was friends with several ball players back in the '80s when I attended. Back then they were talking about - "if we had enough money". It's over 30 years from then and we are still a bottom feeder despite anything that has been tried.
No disrespect intended at all to anybody ever associated to Terps Baseball. I would love for baseball to be great - but isn't it time to just stop fantasizing that it will get any better? Time to cut it and put the pittance that was baseball's budget into a (male) sport that has a chance to be great.
Bakich gone. Crap.
That just sucks
Just another coach who ups and leaves with no repercussions on his part,
can't blame him if they did offer that much
can't blame him. it's not just the money, why stay at an athletic department that has never committed to baseball and has no money to do so?
Eliminate baseball and fully fund the track and field program.
Come on out and get your whoopin!
Good joke. Please tell another.
Brett Harman went hard as shit at him on Facebook calling him a traitor
Okay. Maryland baseball will go to the CWS,
Maybe Michigan was his "dream job".
Maryland athletics: 1 team, 1 1/2 sports.
From what I've heard, I don't blame Bakich for leaving at all. And at a certain point it wasn't all about the money.
Hard to blame Bakich. I personally thought he'd stay another year or two until a top job in the south opened up but we all knew he was going to leave sooner rather than later. Given how cash strapped the AD is, where baseball ranks on MD's priority list (5th among men's sports) and how terrible our facilities are there was no way we were keeping him.
I wish him the best of luck at Michigan. I will start to look at him differently though if he bails on Michigan after 2-3 years to take over an SEC/ACC school.
Differently, meaning smart and what any of us do as we move ahead in our fields. Almost everyone would jump for double salary, then jump again to get dream job with even more money and opportunity.
I left a job I loved for a 40% raise. Double, I wouldn't even need to think about it.
His girlfriend is from my hometown/my friends stepsister. Maybe I can get some insight.
Milton named interim coach.

Interim although it wouldn't surprise me if Milton is given the job outright...we are not going to get another Backich and even if we do he will up and leave once a better opportunity comes along
