So I'm sitting here still thinking about tonight's debacle when I realized that the only great comebacks I can actually remember, where the team came back from a huge deficit, are the ones that went against us. To wit:
*Senior night '08 vs Clemson (blown 20 point lead)
*Gone in 60 seconds
The classic big MD comeback is this one:
but that was 16 years ago. If we expand this to football, you can add the Frank Reich game to the plus side (way before my time), but on the other side:
*Last game of 2011 against NC State (42-14?)
*At Wake Forest in '07 (24-3 lead with goal-to-go and 16 minutes left)
Of course you have plenty of classic MD teases like:
*2011 vs WVU in footbal
*Greivis' last game ( )
*FSU at home earlier this year
*2007 vs BC at Comcast (aka The First Jamie Lucky Technical Game)
So...yeah. Let's talk about good things like all those great comebacks WE had because I know my not remembering them is just typical Maryland fatalism....right? RIGHT?
Uh.....greatest game I ever saw live in my life?
greivis triple double vs unc overtime. down 7 with about 1 1/2 mins left. 2010
2002 natty champs came back @ uva down 7 with a couple left drew nichalous hit some dagger 3's
bias at dean dome
2004 acc tourney down 20+ at half to nc state stormed back
2004 acc final down 9 to duke with less than 3 left, ot victory
yeah. That 2004 ACC tourney game against NC State comes to mind pretty quickly
a couple years ago (maybe Greivis' Junior year?) we lost 20 point leads to both FSU and Miami
That comeback was unreal. Astonishing to think we put up 26 first half points then followed it up with 59(!) in the second. And that was an ACC tournament semi-final game. One of my personal favorite games.
The idea that we have not had great comeback wins of our own is incorrect.
We were off school the next day because of snow. I watched ESPNnews all day. My best friend growing up was a UNC fan so that made the game extra sweet.
The 2002 @ UVA game comes to mind. If I remember correctly, one of the UVA players mouthed off at the Maryland bench sometime after the inside 4 TV timeout in the second half when they went up 7 or 10 or something, and Juan took it personally.
But yes, suggesting we haven't had big comebacks is untrue. As far as football is concerned, wasn't the Miami MD game in 84 the biggest NCAA football comeback ever until recently?

2000 home game against NC State that featured Hogie rushing the floor was another good comeback.
Also, weren't we down like 14 or more in the NC State road game that Drew won with that deep 3?
This was a good one. Not greatest ever, but down 12 at 18:07 and went on to win by 9.

HOF 12-0 run!
[Gary] It's takes so much energy to come back from a big deficit, you almost never can get over the top [Williams]
UNC at home in 2007. We were down 12 I think with like 6 or 7 minutes.
2nd round ACC tournament game against NC State in 2004, down 20 at half?
The 2004 ACC tourney game v. NCS was EPIC !
the other great part of that was watching many Lame-O Terp fans
have to buy back tickets for the final because they sold out at half !
It aint over til its over - Yogi
THE IN-BETWEEN GAME
Great story of Gary yelling at everyone in the huddle mid-way through the second half when we'd already wiped out the deficit screaming something along the lines of "WTF are we supposed to do now you came back too fast."
the whole 2004 tourney was unbelievable
game one vs. a very good Wake team (3 seed), Biscotti's body guard carries a gun with him into the arena and accidently shoots himself in the ass during the game, that win sealed our 11th straight NCAA tourney appearance
game 2 comeback vs. nc state, aided by a technical foul on the NC state bench for I forgot what (something about being on the floor during timeouts or something maybe)
and game 3 vs. Duke, we had a pretty good comeback as well, i remember we had to foul at the end of regulation, to get the ball back to tie it up. And the crying duke kid
talk about unbelievable , I actually won all expense paid trip to that tourney through md alumni raffle. one $10 ticket I sent in with a check that I got it in mail months earlier. 4 tourney books, 3 nights hotel, and $250 spending cash. they announced winner at halftime of last home game of season ( I believe wake forest , we lost) my buddy calls me leaving frantic messages that they announced my name over loud speaker at game)
needless to say , weekend was insane. we followed the same ritual everynight, called and made golf reservations for the next day each night, even Saturday night when there was no need, same hooters for wings and beer each morning right up to game time, same bar each night. of course didn't stop drinking . the n.c. state game we were ridiculed by state fans in the lobby at halftime for the beating we were taking. we stayed at hotel where n.cstate was, and saw them arrive after the game. at the bar we drank with shit eating grins as they walked by. and then of course the duke game.
truly the most epic road trip and 3 days for buddies and myself, haven't been back since. we kinda of know it will never be topped.
I think we were down a couple of touchdowns in three of the four wins over Rivers.
Michigan State in the tourny in 2010 was aweso- AW SHIT
the one where we go to 10 straight ncaa tournaments after turgeon fails his first two years!
The UNC game in 09-10 was classic. Great game. I also like the UNC Wilmington game in the 2003 NCAA Tournament. Drew Nicholas hitting that 3 to cap the comeback was great.
Wow, you should write up that whole experience carefully in about 5 pages and have it ready to publish for the 10the anniversary of that tournament. Seriously. And don´t leave out the hooters and wings detail.
