After 24 games into the second season of the Turgeon era it is safe to say that we are having some issues:
For this team to get to the NCAA's there is a lot of work to do, not impossible but time to start Saturday night. A few things that I think need to be worked out and worked on the final 4 weeks of the season. I am sure many of you will agree.
We have 4 post players in Len 7'1, Cleare 6'9, Padgett 6'8 and Mitchell 6'8. We need to have these big boys post up on the BLOCKS. I have seen enough of Len 25 feet from the hoop with the high screen and roll. He is not a threat out there. He can't stick a jumper past 8-10 feet, he does not roll to the basket well and our guards are not good passers in making that pass even a possibility. His behind should be on the blocks, or elbow extended working with the other post player in the game. We owned UVA in the paint, but they actually made it a mismatch for us by bringing our post players out on defense, clearing the paint. Watching Len guard Anderson is laughable. Watching anyone guard him other than Wells, or maybe Faust was a joke.
Too many guys on this team do not play to their strengths. Shot selection is poor at best, selfish play, poor passing and execution remains a constant theme. The rotation clearly has to be trimmed at this point. And stop jerking guys with PT. I mean sometimes that works, but for 5-6 weeks? I could care less who plays to be honest, I just want to see good basketball played the right way. IMO the only guys who should think about the 3 are Aronhalt and Layman. Allen can shoot it, when under control. Do not need to see Faust jack it off one pass or worse, no passes. Our BB IQ is the lowest I have ever seen at Maryland. At times it looks like we do not even have a scouting report. We can't locate Joe Harris? Uva has two lethal shooters, we have to get out on them and force them to put it on the floor. Play off of Jontel Evans, help out more on Harris and Jesperson. Enough already. A lack of changes has killed this team.
This is the type of team that should make 4-8 passes EVERY POSSESSION. Not take 4-8 seconds off the shot clock. It amazes me that last year Stoglin got killed by Turgeon for this, but this year I hear nothing from him with certain guys. Until our offense becomes more disciplined we will NEVER WIN against a good well coached team.
Defense is not bad, but for the love of god stop trying to press and leave the pass up the sideline wide open so our press is broken immediately. We got some turnovers vs UVA but they are not good at handling pressure. Bottom line is we have to probably beat Duke, Clemson, UNC at home and win a few games on the road and finish up at UVA with a win. You can kind of see the writing on the wall at this point with Bennett and Larranaga and their style really kicking in at their new schools. I am hoping for Turgeon in year 3 to see that dramatic turnaround but it needs to start soon. I certainly don't feel that comfortable in close games.
No, it's not impossible, but one of two things have to happen that won't:
1) Don't lose another regular season game.
2) Win the ACCT, or make it to the final with only one more regular season loss.
I expected much worse given the source but this is fairly reasonable aside from the douchey title.
I disagree that we should abandon the press. I don't think we do it enough. We are horrible in half court situations, so I'd like to see us in transition basketball. I know Faust and Layman particularly would benefit from this. I dunno, maybe we're terrible doing it in practice.
OWG behind me at the game Sunday. He just kept repeating:
1) They need to get it to Len on every possession, nobody can stop him. (what game was he watching?)
2) The press is too soft, they need to press on defense.
3) They (UVA) only have two good players, just clamp down on them and they can't score.
Awesome to have that as the audio to accompany the entire game. Also, OWG was pretty impressed with #4, Ethan Allen.
I busted a gut on that, LOL. Why is that so funny?
Made for all the pain and love I feel, even now...For a love I thought was eternal...For a woman I shared my whole world with.
I missed that part. You are absolutely right IMO.
THIS TEAM IS BUILT FOR PRESSING. Our strengths AND WEAKNESSES lend us to a pressing style.
I guess I should clarify what I meant better....I meant they need to press when the situation calls for it, but they need to stop giving up the sideline on the first pass of their full court press. Once the ball goes up to near mid court you are retreating and it usually leads to a dunk, layup or open jumper. I have not been impressed with Turgeon's pressure. I thought last year they did not press due to personnel issues and depth.
I would also say that this team when they play up tempo should be better BUT the decision making is god awful in those situations too. I just look at a team like UVA who has a stiff center in Mitchell at about 6'7 and a below average PG in Jontel Evans and wonder how they do it, and Turgeon whines and cries nightly about his PG issues??? While Steve Blake is not on our roster I think the staff has not gotten the most out of this roster and team. The losses to FSU, UVa and on the road at Miami were ALL winnable if we had discipline and a BB IQ.
The reason Len sucks and can't post up on the block more than twice in any game is because he is not physically strong enough. He is tired after 4 minutes of playing, which is probably why Turgeon doesn't want to play a full court tempo.
I am okay with Allen's game- he is a freshman.
Faust flat out sucks.
Layman has been consistently good lately, and looks to be decent long term.
Our only hope this year is Dez. And, don't forget about Padgett- he could be big against Duke.
To me Wells, behind Len is the most inconsistent player on the team. So much was expected but little has been delivered to this point. He disappears in a lot of situations. I am hoping he brings it Saturday night.

not only is this incorrect, it is the exact opposite of correct. despite len's recent semi-slump, if you look at the stats, they are still the two most consistent contributors on the team. this is not even debatable.
3 years in a row of no NCAA tourney would be devastating.
Just wondering what exactly the expectations were for a team with 4 freshman and 3 sophomores in the regular rotation and no viable option at PG I figured they would be a bubble team going into the season and they still may make that.
Of course they are frustrating at times. But that comes with the territory when you have these handicaps. I'm not blaiming Turge when Seth Allen plays out of control, I just see a kid with a lot of talent who is learning the college game.

Every team in America has a leading scorer and rebounder. They disappear at times. Neither has lived up to the billing.
That still doesn't make either of them the most inconsistent players on the team. And both are hurt big time by the lack of a PG. Wells played with Tu Holloway and Mark Lyons last year. Now he's playing with Pe'Shon Howard and Nick Faust.

No kidding. Losing to the "#1" team in the country by a couple of points, then reeling off 13 wins in a row set expectations a bit high.
Ok now the A2R I know is showing up.
So you are in the "camp" that the main issue with MD is the point guard position and that would solve nearly all? I agree that it has been awful, but I also feel like it has been somewhat of an excuse lately.
frustrated fan rant ahead...
Behind watching the team this season, just finished the UVA home disaster. This is either the least coachable team in college basketball or Turgeon and company have botched the season and player development. Let's go back to after getting the Wells news, could anyone envision so little coming together? We've maxed out the worst case scenario here. We had what seemed like was going to be a top of line go to do it all star center in Len who's shown a wide ranging ability in spots as well as signs of enthusiasm... 2-3 other big bodied bigs with apparent post move ability... a premiere slasher with an NBA body/athlete in Wells... sharpshooter off bench(Logan)... 2 kids who are supposed to be decent 3point shooters(Allen, Laymen)... 3-4 bigs who are supposed to be very good rebounders... a vet PG who while being somewhat limited physically is tough and a very unselfish passer on a team with lots of tools... 3 wings with elite of elite defensive ability/body potential (Faust, Wells, Laymen)... 3 wings who we think/thought should have high slash/attack basket ability (Faust, Allen, Wells). NOW, how in the hell do we find ourselves where we are?
We knew we weren't loaded with sharpshooters, but does every successful CBB team need them? Yes we're without a good PG, but with these kind of athletes, tools, and, guys who've flashed the abilities, shouldn't we be able to put together a better working unit? Do our coaches actually COACH entry/post passes and position? Do we coach kids on actually improving their shooting? Can we get one fucking kid(including later Gary years) who becomes a good shooter? Our offense is a fucking mess, you shouldn't need a goddamn all world PG to pass it inside to a 7'1 giant with athletic ability, especially when we have a bunch of friggon 6'6+ wings towering over the guards trying to defend the entry. Does Alex speak english yet? How much would it cost the program to higher an interpreter for 10 hrs a damn week to tell him his ass he's sitting the bench if he doesn't stop fading away 90% of the time vs kids half a foot shorter than him. He's shown the moves at times, i don't get why in the hell he's regressed into the low % off balanced fades. I'd even take face up mid range jumpers from him all day vs what we're getting now, he's as good a shooter as the alternatives.
Hire someone who specializes in not just shooting, but the psychology of shooting as well... there is sure in the hell a market for it here. All this shouldn't be rocket science. You have the bigs with post ability, feed them, teach position, have slashers slash to open spots after the doubles. If your staff is incapable of helping develop kids shooting stroke, then you should've brought in more shooting (SOME signs of this at least). Everything about our offense blows right now in terms of execution. I shouldn't say this next part, but I'd be willing to bet Gary would fair better with this type of squad, athletes pressing, open court, flexing wells laymen ect, a little Baxter lite action with some of these bigs.
Someone gimme a little hope on Turg developing shooters and post players at his previous stops, tell me there is a track record. Don't have the time to research it after watching these games and now raving here.
Maryland has underachieved this year. No other way to put it. In games teams have had close to equal talent (give or take) we are dreadful:
FSU @ home: loss
NC ST @ home: win
UVA @ home: loss
Duke @ home: win
That is 2-7 against similar competition and that is unacceptable. Not to mention piss poor performances on the road at BC and GT.
Whatever it is in your life that has kept you from watching these games in real time is surely better than watching this season. Seriously tho, I hope it all works out for you.
I'd suggest just stopping right now.
*********SPOILER ALERT*********** I wouldn't even advise watching thedook game. It was beyond ugly despite the w. Something like 26 turnovers. Sloppy play. It's just not worth it.
