Column: Soccer Needs a New Home

Despite two national championships since 2005 and consistent sellouts, Maryland soccer is still stuck at an erector set of a stadium in Ludwig Field.

  • Great article and I could not agree more. Maryland really needs to put together a plan to make this happen.

  • There is no reason once field turf is installed that the soccer team can't play games at Byrd. They do deserve their own field, but at least they would have access to Gossett and the ability to dress in real locker rooms.

It would also be nice if UA would make jerseys available for sale. Sasho says they won't make them unless they get a guarantee order of 10,000. Really????? If you make them for the team, you could at least make a few extra to sell in the team store.

  • As long as it's at the Ludwig site, we could have such an unbelievable atmosphere with a real stadium. I know I've been at sold out games where students were literally climbing over the fence to get in. We could easily rock 12,000 and maybe more for huge games.

While yes they would actually have actual locker rooms, I would hate this.

  • Actually, do we REALLY need those recreational fields next to Comcast?

  • The soccer team is not only a phenomenal success story for this university but Sasho is a great ambassador for the school as well. This needs to happen and reward both the mens and womens programs for their unbelievable success.

  • can they build one new stadium for men's and women's soccer AND men's and women's lax? Is there anything about the fields for those sports that would prevent a dual purpose stadium? That would be ideal. make it something like 10,000 actual seats with other standing room, or temporary areas, like a grassy hill where people could bring their own chairs to fit thousands more.

Yes. Plenty of schools use the same stadium for soccer and lacrosse.

My thoughts as well. Because there always is one, the roadblock to that is that those are owned by Student Affairs, not athletics. And it would make too much sense.

The field at Byrd would be way too narrow to play there. You can get away with it for a one-off type game, but over the course of a season it would be awful. Not to mention playing in front of a 10% full stadium sucks.

  • I was curious what the thought of Turf for soccer is. I know the Seattle Sounders and many HS teams play on turf, but I'm guessing Grass is preferred. Of the top of my head, UMBC and Towson use Grass for Soccer, but I guess Loyola uses turf.

A 10k stadium would be cool, Byrd just seems to big Lacrosse, yet you go to a intimate 9k place like Hopkins and it's a special environment. Seeing how much a 10k stadium costed Towson, This is probably a bigger project than people expect.

  • See: Creighton's soccer stadium. Barring a good location, a stadium like this would be awesome (of course with seats behind the goals for The Crew).

    See: Creighton's soccer stadium.

It's hard to talk about college soccer stadiums and not bring up Creighton. This is hands down one of the best facilities in the country and honestly this article really highlights how Sasho has earned something like this to at least be put on paper. When DC united was in early discussions to create a stadium in PG county Sasho was pursuing pushing games there if they'd be close to campus. Obvioiusly that fell through. I don't know what the plans are for the old Washington Post plant but that's probably the best bet at this point.

Seeing as how this guy can shape a program over the years I can only imagine his input on a brand new soccer facilitiy.

  • posted this in another thread, but thought I would share it here as well:

the campus facilities master plan calls for improvements to the current location of ludwig and not a new soccer stadium. page 73 and 74 show some detail here: http://www.facilities.umd.edu/MasterPlan/Docs/Sep14Draft.pdf

those improvements (as detailed by the plan) are set to be done during 'planning period 2' which doesn't begin until 2022.....

A few MLS teams use FieldTurf, as well as a few other clubs globally, but most of Europe frowns upon it or doesn't allow it at their top levels. I seem to remember some English players getting bitter a couple years back playing on an artificial surface in Russia, and they actually had the stadium in Moscow changed from Turf to Grass for the Champions League final that was held there.

I actually like playing on FieldTurf, mainly because for rec type fields, you rarely see well-maintained grass. If the field is used a lot, the grass will get beat to hell, and will actually cause more injuries IMO. A lot of professional players seem to think playing on turf causes more injuries, but I think its more forgiving than bad grass.

If they were to build a facility that would be used by multiple teams (like mens and womens lacross/soccer as mentioned previously), and was also being used for practices, it would have to be FieldTurf. But grass has and will always be preferred by most of the soccer community.

Creighton is different though because they don't have a football team and it's a private university.

I just don't see where we're going to get the funding for a new soccer stadium.
