Channelsurfing and ATDHE shut down! :(

  • The way I heard this explained is that the ICE can only seize domain names, not DNS servers.

All these sites have to do is buy a new domain name to fwd to their DNS server each time.

So thats how they got back up so fast. I wonder what the govt process is for seizing them. Do they have to get a court ruling or is it just some guy at the top that makes the decision.

  • You'll be fine. These things either pop right back up or something takes its place quickly.

  • Had this taken place on a Saturday night or Sunday morning during football season I would have been devastated. Everything will get straightened out pretty quickly, I hope.

I read somewhere that there is a court order. Some of these sites are hosted outside of America though and just link to, not host, the copy written material. There is a bill before congress called COICA that deals with a lot of these issues.

ATDHE was my source for 6 Ravens games this year. I might be screwed for next year.

    Just go to a bar.

If true this whores me. Has anybody tried the Directv scam where you get the dish then call and change your address? I have buddies in Bmore who did it to get all the Skins games but I wonder if it'd work cross country.

first off you can install your own dish so you don't need to change your address

2nd, you need to dig deep in the various dtv forums as some channels / transponders don't hit all spots in the usa

iirc it's not a likely problem but it's possible - are you 1 state off or 3,000 miles away from dc?

They told me they switched from Comcast to Directv, then after the dish was installed they called up to switch their address to their parent's house in Charles County, which got them DC programming.

I'm 3000 miles away and don't really know anything about the technology so I'm not sure if I could pull the same thing off. I watch all my games now, but it would save me probably a grand in bar tabs per year if I could get DC television programming somehow. I don't really mind going to bars but sometimes shit happens, like the UVA game being mysteriously blacked out last week causing me to rush home to catch the 2nd half on Dexter's feed. If this happened to me during a much bigger game I'd probably flip.

Also could I possibly work it out by installing a slingbox at my parent's house?

slingbox works great if you have the bandwidth

It's my understanding that the idea is to put it in your home so you can watch your stories while you're traveling or whatever. It wouldn't ruffle any feathers if I just set it up across the country to steam excusively in my house would it? Since there are no monthly fees (right?) it seems like this could be an easy way to split the cable bill with another household and they might have ways to deter that.

I know plenty of people that use it for the same thing, just internationally. It's not ideal for using full-time I don't think, and all the people I know that use it are doing so at total different times of the day so most of the time both parties aren't trying to watch something at the same time. Don't know if that makes a difference or not.

As was mentioned before, the big thing is that it really requires a lot of bandwidth, on both ends, to stream the HD broadcasts. It really is sending the actual broadcast (if your bandwidths can handle it), so would blow Dexter's feed out of the water. Think ESPN3's highest resolution or better.

Eh, it's getting a little less appealing the more I learn. The reason I usually go to bars instead of watching Dexter's or some other feed is because of picture quality/speed (no disrepect intended, Dexter is an American hero).

Also are you saying that the host cannot watch the program at the same time as the person using the slingbox, or just that it could cause quality issues due to bandwith? I read on their site that to avoid copyright infringement or something only one user can access the stream at a time, but I assumed that did not include the user the stream was originating from.

Dunno about the one user thing as I've never used it personally - I was just talking about the bandwidth thing. Fwiw, I'm sure that no matter what measures they came up with, someone has figured out a loophole. (possibly like Toogs mentioned)

There's nothing stopping the person physically in the room from watching the same thing you're watching, and it wouldn't affect quality at all. But they can't change the channel and watch something else or yours will change too (unless you have 2 cable boxes or whatever).

Having to be on the same channel pretty much wrecks my plan. Thanks for the info.
