Breaking: Stoglin Declares for NBA

  • It's beside the point because the stupidity of the rule has no bearing on his refusal to follow it. I don't think you can compare scholarship athletes with the general student population either. If you want to argue that students on academic scholarship should be tested too then so be it, but that's like me complaining that the speeding ticket I got a few weeks ago is unfair because there are less speed cameras in other locations.

I know for a fact that enough/certain drug-related infractions can get a normal student banned from campus or expelled or something similarly serious.

Well I'm assuming nothing has changed in 5-6 years

It hasn't. If any random student gets caught smoking once in the dorms and is found responsible, the standard sanction for this is loss of housing, and either suspension for a year or drug testing for two years.
If you choose drug testing and fail a drug test, you can be suspended.

Why can't I compare scholarship athletes with the general student population? Aren't they students as well? Or at least, that is what the NCAA claims. What if the rule was that student athletes weren't allowed to have sex while in college? Would you be a little more upset if he got kicked out for violating that rule? Again, I don't see why what athletes do in their free time should be the business of the school any more than it is for any other student.

While true, that is completely irrelevant to this situation. Losing our best player is not a good thing. Some of you guys are HOF stupid.

You are so far off base I don't even know what to respond to....

The fact is a student athlete CHOOSES to be a student athlete and there are privileges that come along with being a student-athlete.

You can't compare Stoglin to a student in the general population because it is different. A regular student doesn't have mandatory weight lifting sessions. A regular student doesn't have to go to practice! But someone who has chosen to play basketball does have to do those things. The same goes for failing a drug test. Its a burden on a basketball player that comes along with the privileges of CHOOSING to play basketball. The regular student didn't get a free trip to Puerto Rico last year...

I think the school has more of an interest in setting conduct standards for students on scholarship, although it sounds as if there isn't really a distinction in the punishment side anyway based on some of the posts above relating to the drug-related punishments of the general student population.

If the rule was that student athletes weren't allowed to have sex while in college, a la BYU, then I would think it was a nonsensical rule, but I wouldn't blame the content of the rule for the player being kicked off the team. If the player was aware of the rule and chose to violate three times, then I would blame the player for failing to conform his conduct to the school's standards.

Yeah I really don't get the hate on Stogs the player. Stogs was one of the most dynamic scorers we've had around here in a while. With more help he doesn't take so many off balance 20 footers. But when he looked up and saw Padge, Weis, P and Faust standing around deferring to him as the shot clock wound down he really had little choice but to take it himself.

Put him around better talent and he would have been a different player IMO. Besides as some have posted even with all the bad shots he was among the league leaders in FG %.

To pretend that he won't be missed, or that Faust was somehow better, is just stupid.

A free trip to Puerto Rico!? I had no idea! In that case, might as well sign them up for weekly anal cavity searches. Never know what you might find. After all, they signed up for it.

  • If he actually wanted to stay, this is excruciatingly bad judgment. I wish him the best, will miss him as a player on the team, but he's not five years old. Hopefully he can grow up, learn from this and is able to move on. I assume he can make some money somewhere playing ball. He doesn't seem like a bad kid and many of us have made similar and/or more significant mistakes, though maybe with less on the line. Sorry his career had to end this way.

  • I'm kind of upset that the news on Parker got out. That wasn't necessary, why couldn't it have been left that he decided to transfer to a better basketball situation?

  • Will the team grad rates be adversely affected by the loss of Parker and Stoglin, such that the NCAA imposes some sanctions?

Not if they're both leaving in good academic standing, which I think they classify as something like a 2.5 GPA.

But you're wrong. They didn't sign up for anal cavity searches. That wasn't part of the deal. Drug tests are. And when you are an athlete you know drug tests part of the deal...You are explicitly told so. Repeatedly.

  • Count me in as one (of the few, it seems) who's in favor of our school doing things the right way. We'd be absolutely blasting a team like UConn if they didn't suspend one of their top players for failing 3 drug tests. I like Stoglin, but he was warned and continued to break the rules.

I'm not trying to excuse Stoglin. But you seem to be saying that it's ok to require student athletes to do anything as long as you tell them in advance. I'm saying that drug testing for marijuana makes no sense and is punitive against student athletes who make a lot of money for their schools. I don't care if they tell everybody in advance or not - it's a stupid rule. (and yes, Stogs is dumb for failing 3x. College kids do dumb shit.)
