Bradford Out, Vanderlinden Returns? Or LJ Sr?

  • Vandy is/was a very good recruiter, he let the players run all over him as a HC however.

My only issue is that he's a bit unproven as a DC. He's been co-DC for the last month, but before that hadn't been a DC for the last 15 years, and only has 4 years total experience at N'western (he was position coach at Colorado).

I'm enamored with the idea of a Locksley/Baker OC/DC staff so even though Vandy is an upgrade it feels like a let down. Baker is such a perfect fit its unbelievable but entirely believable that we wouldn't pull the trigger or make it happen.

I don't have a major problem with Vandy. True, he is not the sexy pick here (i.e., Johnson, Shannon, or Baker), but he is a competent defensive coordinator, competent recruiter, and not Bradford. If they run what Penn State runs, I think we will all be much happier with the onfield results.

Now, the key part of Chick's original report was that they were putting together "contract details". That tells me that Vandy was contacted and expressed at least cursory interest. All of the folks that he may have had issues with in 2000 are likely gone. Now, MD is in a better place and he isn't being asked to lead the team, just do what he has demonstrated competence doing for his entire career (coordinate the defense). I won't be doing cartwheels, but again...he's not Bradford.

I tried being reasonable once. I didn't like it.

the vandy days are here again. just like his tenure, we will have 15K in the seats.

also, wasn't mr pedophile his mentor?

KA and edsall. dumb and dumber.

we can have bill walsh and buddy ryan as coordinators, but its fruitless with king moron as our head coach.

Why do you think Sandusky was his mentor? Sandusky was gone from PSU (coaching staff) by the time Vandy got there in 2001. And Vandy had no connection with PSU before that, right?

I hadn't heard that he (JS) was still working with the staff at all - just that he was bringing kids to campus and running camps.

Maybe not the greatest move, but definitely a step up from Bradford.

    Really?

Sandusky went into his forced retirement in 1999. Vanderlinden arrived at PSU in 2001.

It's basically the equivalent of suggesting that Chris Cosh is Greg Gattuso's mentor.

  • Anyone is better than Bradford at this point. i am going to buy tickets for 2012 seasons. and I say my fellow Terp fans should too. Please support the players. They brought in Lock and we are getting a legit D coach who can also recruit PA , DE , And MD and NJ too. what else do we want? yes Shannon would have been flashy pick, But the man woul dhave wanted 600K a year watch. and Lj isnt leaving Penn state so just end that fantasy.

Ball so HArd, all the Bytches wana climb me.

  • Vandy is very well connected in the coaching circle. His mentor was Bill McCartney. Vandy served as a GA at Michigan when McCartney was on Bo Schembechler's staff. McCartney got the HC gig at Colorado and Vandy eventually got there as D-Line coach working for Gary Barnett (who he followed to N'western). The staff at Colorado was stacked with Barnett, Lou Tepper, Jerry Dinardo and a bunch of other guys. That core became Vandy's contacts in the game.

Sure Vandy crossed paths with Sandusky, but he was def not his mentor.

  • Any news on what is happening to Brafor? Are we buying him out? Is he going back to LB coach, or whatever we hired him for?

  • Well at least something is happening...I half expected RE to stick to his guns - "it was the players not executing, blah, blah" and keep the staff intact. I assume it was partially KAs "top to bottom" review that pushed some of these moves as well.

At this point any changes have to be viewed as good - at least they are trying something. And a recruiting crew of Locks/Vandy/LJ might be able to get some talent here. It's a start.

yeah, I saw on twitter about Larry Johnson being considered too! Gotta love what he could bring here recruiting wise. Him & Locksley would clean up!

  • Amazing.

In essence, Anderson is raising the ante on Fridge supporters. Hiring back the two guys responsible for the recruits Fridge haters said Fridge couldn't get? Ballsy.

good recruiter, who did he get ?

The point is probably moot - but yes - his recruits were the Orange Bowl and Chick Fil A Bowl teams. And at one point, while he was here, he, Locksley and Franklin were all listed among the top recruiters in college football.
