2013 Basketball Recruiting Thread (Barton visiting this weekend)

  • With the AAU season starting up it's a good time to put a little positive focus and energy toward possible commits for the 2013 season. Turge has shown that he doesn't make getting on the road or down the street. I believe he will make us all happy with this class.

  • It was quite apparent that The Harrisons did not want to play with Britt, but is there any word on whether or not they'd play with Rysheed? I certainly like Rysheed, but I'm passing on ANYBODY who hurts our chances at getting the Harrisons.

  • It really is a tough situation for Turge. You are holdng 2 spots, and may come up empty handed. It does help that they are commiting this summer. IMO the father is the key. Calipari is slimey.

Well then, easy decision for me. Do not want unless he waits for the Harrisons to commit elsewhere.

    iheartjamesgist

  • This is a situation made for 20/20 hindsight. It would be great if the Harrisons commit ''early'' but what if they drag it out? Rysheed won't want to wait on the twins, if he's ready to commit before they do. If he wants to commit before the twins and we try to delay, he may go elsewhere, and we could come up empty on our primary recruits. If we get the twins, no one will remember.

I just don't get how someone would pass on another high quality PG because they are hoping the Harrisons commit.....kinda like buying a lotto ticket, then quitting your job in my eyes.

  • Just sign Rysheed and don't tell anybody. It's not that hard. And if he starts telling people that he signed, just deny it.

You can't be punished by the NCAA for doing that, and the people who admire cheating will love you. Win - Win!

Yes because winning the lottery is just as likely as getting two recruits who have named you as one of their final four. Brilliant assessment.

Now if it was 2003 and I was suggesting that we hold off on taking Mike Jones until LeBron James made his decision, then that would be comparable, but in this situation Aaron and Andrew have named us as one of their top four, and you can't convince me that Baylor and Nova have a better chance than us at getting these kids. So to me that leaves us as at worst the second favorite to get these kids. So with the solid odds we have at getting these kids, I'm not giving up on that until THEY make the decision to go elsewhere.

These kids could be a once-in-a-generation recruiting item for us, and it would be utterly absurd for Turgeon to call them before they've made their decision, and say "Sorry, but we've decided to take a borderline 5-star recruit because we don't have the balls to wait it out with you two."

It's not about having balls, it's about being realistic. I think that if Jordan were to want to commit right now, we'd probably be wise to wait it out and hope for the best. Now if it's November and the Harrisons decide to push their announcement until the spring and Jordan wants to commit then, that's a little bit different.

I really want them a lot, but they are just not once in a generation. Not for Maryland. We should absolutely be involved with players of that caliber every season and land players of that caliber every few seasons. If this were Lebron James, yes, but there are players as good as these two every single season.

  • I'd say the battle is still very much on for the Harrisons. Just last week in NO the Twins answered "Maryland" when asked by a UK reporter what UK's biggest competition was. Andrew observered that MD. "didn't have too good of a year this year, but I know Coach Turgeon is going to turn things around." Aaron said re. MT "...I'm very comfortable when I talk to him"

Two random top-10 players /= the Harrisons. Why does everyone outside of Hogie and me fail to see this? We can absolutely get players of this caliber in any given year, but the recognition of having elite twins will do more than any other top-10 players could possibly do, outside of a super elite like LeBron or Durant.

This goes way beyond just having two talented players on our roster for a year or two. The attention placed on the team by the media would explode the second these two stepped on campus. Then, in all likelihood, they'd go on to be starters in the NBA for over a decade, still having more media hype than most others, simply because they are twins. All the while, "Maryland" is constantly listed next to their names. On top of that, they're the face of Under Armour basketball, and they have their own line of shoes that kids will be wearing all across the country, including shoes with the Maryland logo on them, much like Durant has with Texas. Obviously it's a stretch to think they'll ever have the following that Durant has, or that UA will ever be in the same realm as Nike, but it would nonetheless be a major positive in the eyes of recruits for many years.

And with the first part of your post, that definitely makes sense. If they're ready to go in the summer, and Jordan has moved on beause he was ready to commit even earlier, then we'll still have plenty of other options left on the board. If they go on to November, and nothing has changed, yet Jordan is still there for the taking, then I would, at the very least, consider taking Jordan. But if they've narrowed it down to the top-2 and we seem to be in great shape, I'm holding on.

  • So them being twins means they will give us more impact than MKG and Davis (for instance)? That seems like a stretch based on nothing, really. I think we will be just fine one way or the other.

Again, that's an extreme example. It's not terribly unusual for a team to get get two top-10 recruits, but it's extremely unusual for a team to get the #1 and #2 overall recruit. Kentucky getting MKG/Davis and Wall/Cousins are the only times I recall it happening in my lifetime.

And Kentucky doesn't exactly play by the rules.

I have always been a "Bird in the hand" kind of guy when it comes to recruiting, but if they are going to commit this summer, I think you have to wait to see what they decide. At least we are involved with some quality second options.

This is what I was going to say a few posts back. But in reality the Harrison twins are a little different. They obviously really like Maryland and I think we should give them the benefit of the doubt and let them decide where they want to go to college, at least until November. If Jordan has comitted elsewhere and the Harrison twins go to Kentucky, we'll still have solid options on the table.

  • If Rysheed chooses MD then I would take him.

    djh

  • Why would you turn a five star baller away. If the twins expressed their genuine interest in Md and said they did not want to play with Jordan then I wouldn't take him, but that's the only reason not to take him. The kid is a baller. Why not play with a three guard set with Cleare, Len and Mitchell rotating the two post/big spots. But then again there's Faust and do you have Nick start or be the sixth man? Not a bad problem to have though. A team consisting of the twins, Jordan, Faust, Cleare, Mitchell, Len, etc coached by MT would have ncaa championship potential written all over it. Besides the twins and Jordan who are big targets for 2013? Is Tyler Ennis interested in Md? What about Bejay? Who else?

  • if Rysheed wants to commit, we take em.

We aren't Kentucky, Kansas, UNC, or any of them goons....if we (a team that is currently struggling but definitely turning the corner), get the chance for a 5 star top 30 player.....we take em.

HOWEVER, Harrisons will commit by end of summer. Hopefully this is a non-issue.

Don't forget Layman. If MT can tell Parker he's not going to be getting a lot of p/t, after losing SM as the starting 3, then it must be because he's totally sold on Layman.
