Weekend wrap: Jake Layman unstoppable in season opener

The start to Jake Layman's senior season couldn't have gotten off to a much better start.
Layman, a Maryland small forward signee, powered his King Philip squad to a 48-41 win over Franklin (Mass.) on Friday night.
KP got a monster 21-point, 26-rebound and 7 blocked shots night out of 6-foot-9, Maryland-bound Jake Layman, but it was some staunch team defense down the stretch that allowed the Warriors to rally past their Kelley-Rex Division foes.

Two things:
26 rebounds is an awesome performance.
I didn't know Layman was 6'9"

Cool...wondered how he looked on his HS team because I didn't get to see him on BABC

Good thread. I'm to lazy to search, do we have a thread that discusses 2012 or 2013 basketball commitments, which may affect other targets' decisions. For example, Kansas received a verbal from a 2013 SG/WF yesterday.

Goodness gracious he looks smoother than in his older videos.
He had to duck his head to prevent it from hitting the backboard when he was going for a block!

IIRC Dunleavy was drafted #3 when he went to the NBA. I think most of us would take that!
As long as we want to dream, how about a 6' 9'' white guy...like Larry Bird?!

Skilled is the 1st thing that comes to mind. He's the kind of kid Duke's made bank on for decades. Reminds me (just a little), of Joe Smith's arc. Dean Smith and K were scratching their heads by the time he was a Sr commit to MD, wondering how TF they dropped the ball with his recruitment.
Doubtful Len comes back for his Jr year, but a frontcourt of Len, Cleare and Layman would be unheard of (in terms of length) in this day and age of college hoops. Throw in the twins and you may as well mail it in.

DIdn't see this added, but Layman put up 28 in a loss in his 2nd game, and then added 18 points, 15 boards, and 5 blocks in just 2 and a half quarters in a W a few days ago. He sat the final quarter and a half because it was a blowout.

The Village School wins 2nd title
The Village School boys basketball team has a tough road ahead to capture its third title this season.
The Vikings open play in the Houston ISD Boys Basketball Tournament against state-ranked Westbury Christian at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, at Butler Field House.
"We can compete against any team in the state," said The Village School head coach Don Harvey "We're excited about playing Westbury Christian."
The Vikings are full of confidence after winning the Nederland Tournament last week. The Village School (16-2) won all four games, crushing Baytown Sterling 87-58 in the semifinals before edging Beaumont West Brook 56-53 in the championship game.
Senior post Shaquille Cleare was named the tourney's most valuable player, averaging 26 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks. Cleare had 32 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks in a 72-41 win against Port Arthur Memorial.
Joining Cleare on the all-tournament team were senior wing Gary Smith, who scored 21 points in the finals; senior guard Trevion Willliams; and junior point guard Isaiah Taylor

BOYS BASKETBALL
Athlete: Shaquille Cleare
Achievement: The senior post was named most valuable player after leading the Vikings to the title at the Nederland Tournament. Cleare averaged 26 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks in four games.

Achievement: The senior post played well for the Vikings at the Houston ISD Boys Basketball Tournament, scoring 20 points in an 89-85 semifinal loss to Wheatley and 30 in a 69-54 victory over Sterling in the third-place game.

Does anybody know if Gary was working on Layman? I don't follow recruiting that closely, but it seems like the first time I heard about this kid was nearly when he committed. Is this all-Turg?

Layman goes for 19 points/16 boards, then "only" 15 points in a pair of wins.
