Terps “Mentally Tough” vs. Wake

Pe'Shon Howard

Maryland picked up its second ACC road win of the season Saturday at Wake Forest.

NOTEBOOK: Maryland made the decision to "grow up" after its embarrassing loss to Georgia Tech, NCAA Tournament chatter, North Carolina’s steady improvement and more.

    • I mean let's not forget Wake Forest is complete garbage. But yes, I'm glad they managed to not shoot themselves in the foot to the point of defeat and the foul trouble did require mental toughness to overcome.

    • I disagree not with what Jakob says, but with what he says most analysts believe we will need to get to the NCAAT. If (and of course this is a BIG if) we beat UNC and UVA, we would be beating two teams ahead of us in the standings, one which is now probably top 25 the other on the road. The win at Wake and the (would be) win at UVA, combined with Northwestern would give us 4 roads wins....not a ton, but certainly enough. Combined with the Duke and NC State wins and no real bad losses (yes you can point to BC and GT but there's plenty of ways to spin these and say they aren't really that bad as they are conference opponents who have played lots of tough games).... then what we will have is this:

As of the start of the ACCT, (this scenario is beating UNC and UVA), we would be like a 'last in' type of team. However, if we lay an egg and lose the first game of the ACCT (which would be to a team at the bottom of the ACC), then our stock gets knocked and we are on the outside looking in. So, as opposed to the analysts, I say if we get the last two regular season wins, it only takes one, not two ACCT wins.

Now if we split in the next two games, we probably have to make it to the finals of the ACCT (meaning 3 wins in the ACCT). But depending on what other teams on the bubble do, it could be that we would still make it in with only two ACCT wins, but much lower odds. Split the last two regular season games with only one ACCT win and we're out.

If we lose to UNC and UVA, only way in is to win the ACCT.

      That's my two cents.

    • We need to go 4-0 to get in. That's extremely unlikely.

    • I think 3-0 (or 3-1 rather) squeaks us in with this years bubble

    • It's impossible to say what record is going to be required when we're no better than a last few in type of team and the one bid conference tournaments haven't played out.

    • If we win these last 2 games we're probably in at that point. Then it all depends on what we do in the ACC tourney.

They did play decently well at a place where Wake has given other good teams fits. I don't think it's too much to offer praise for our performance last game, as frustrating as this season has been.

Eh, that was a painful painful game to watch. I'm just glad we pulled at the W, but Wake is soooo bad. I know that they beat NC State and Miami there, but still. Yeech.

They've also beaten UVA there, and played Duke down to the wire. Life on the road is pretty miserable in the ACC this year...It's not that Wake is even average, but they've played well at home.

    • I am not a betting man, but if we go 4-2 I bet we would be in :)

I thought when Wake cut a 10 pt. lead to 1, the Terps responded like a good team does, with poise and smart play. It was quite refreshing!
