Terps 60, Hokies 55: Player Grades

Jake Layman

Layman ran hot and cold, but on a night when offense was desperately needed, he provided it.

Maryland finally got on the board with a road win, fending off Virginia Tech, 60-55. Let’s take a close look at the Terps’ performances individually and hand out grades …

    • Glad I opened and didn't see a bunch of A's and B's. Glad to get that road win under our belt but wow was that a frustrating game to watch.

    • Agree on Pe. He really stepped up.

Our FT shooting gets an F. When you're on the road, you need to hit your FTs down the stretch if you want to win. Faust really hurt us at FSU and then several guys (Mitchell, Faust, Dez) almost shot us in the foot last night from the line. Len made 2 HUGE FTs to bail us out

    • Didn't realize Padgett grabbed 11 boards last night. Outside of that one possession/foul on the defensive end, he has done a very nice job in the past two games. Wish he could hit his FTs though.

    • I am more than happy that Padge has decided to become Jamar Smith within the last week.

    • Padge played well. He had the 1 minutes stretch of 2 Missed FTs-->Turnover-->Foul 30 ft from basket-->Turnover but other than that he was really solid. He seems to be getting into a groove which is really good for us. If he can give us 10 and 10 most nights that goes a long way for us. His FT shooting was poor last night but it has been good most of the year so I'm not worried about it.

Happy for him because he's such a nice kid and has worked hard for 4 years and really improved as a player.

    • While Faust was pretty bad offensively he was also working very hard on defense and he hit two late foul shots (would have been nice at FSU) so I would move him up to a C.

His shot is always going to be inconsistent in my opinion given the mechanics.

Yeah, I was about to post the same thing. Faust was actually really good on defense last night, I thought. He was just not very good offensively, but he really played great defense and was moderately serviceable in running the offense. Sucks that his shooting has taken such a step back. He's a guy who would be a real weapon if we would run more often, but Turge really likes his half court sets.

I'd also move Wells down a notch. He was pretty invisible on offense, missed some critical free throws, had some bad turnovers (which he's doing waaaaaaay too much now), and had that HORRIBLE turnover towards the end of the game. It was one of the most braindead plays I have ever seen.

Wells is what he is, I guess. Super athlete who can at times dominate games with his size, skill, and athleticism. But holy God, does he make some unbelievably silly plays some times. Not even sure how to fix that, but it must drive Turgeon absolutely insane.

      Refs were horrible as usual.

Again, this is not to say that they were against us or whatever. I hate those arguments. But college basketball officiating is just SOOOOOOOO horrible right now. It's inexcusable.

I'm not kidding, there is a missed call on every single possession nowadays.

The no-call on the Seth Allen runner with around 2 minutes left was unbelievably bad. Unbelievably bad. And it nearly cost us the game.

Having he and Faust in the backcourt together creates a baseline of 7 turnovers a game in ACC play.

    • Besides the free throw shooting, Padgett has been very solid on both ends the last two/three games. When we get zoned the bigs have been passing out of post better of late, but we got to get somebody to penetrate to the paint better. The handle of Faust,Wells,Allen, and Pe-words cannot describe.....

    • Thing about Faust is though is that even though his shooting isn't so good at the moment, as you guys pointed out, his D is good. The other change I like for Faust is him at PG. It let's him contribute in a solid way without feeling so much pressure to score. And since he struggling, why not give him the distributor role? Let him get some assists, (and he almost had a beautiful break away steal). Keeps him involved with the game using his length.

    • faust's d alone warrants a much higher grade

on o, it's definitely a team effort to score only 3 pts in 8 or 9 minutes like we seem to do every game

I agree. There are a number of players that make me cringe when they go to the line, Padge and Pe are not among those. Can't help but notice how much better Padge's FT's have been this year.

    • one of the best things turge did was against vtech inbound plays late in the game. He would have our guy covering there guy inbounding the ball and as soon as we knew where green was going he would have our guy sag back and double green.

Well's defense on Green in the last 2 minutes was outstanding.

I enjoyed seeing Bino really barking at Dez coming out of one of those late timeouts, getting him fired up for the Green assignment
