Stefon Diggs (rookie) and Joe Vellano (defensive line) have earned ACC Player of the Week honors for their performances against Boston College, the league announced Monday.
Diggs finished with 11 receptions for 152 yards, both of which were career highs, and one touchdown. Vellano, meanwhile, finished with five tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and one forced fumble. It is Diggs' fourth honor of the season and Vellano's first from the ACC.
Diggs, who recorded his third 100-yard receiving game of the season, scored a go-ahead touchdown for Maryland with 8:47 left in the fourth quarter off a 66-yard catch-and-run that featured roughly 50 yards after the catch. The precocious freshman continues to climb Maryland's record charts. With 670 receiving yards on the season, Diggs is only 24 yards away from breaking Darrius Heyward-Bey's mark of 694 yards set in 2006. The Good Counsel product also sits at 11th among Maryland's all-purpose yards leaders with 1,354, which is second among freshmen only to Torrey Smith's mark of 1,425 set in 2008.
Vellano is in the midst of yet another dominant season and ranks first in the ACC and ninth nationally with 1.75 tackles for loss per game. His teammates chalk it up to 'The Vellano' tackle.
