Coaches React to Big Ten Move

Mark Turgeon

Mark Turgeon spoke about how excited he was for the opportunity to coach in the basketball-rich ACC when he was introduced as the program's new head coach last May.

Shock was the initial reaction for Mark Turgeon and John Tillman when they heard Maryland was leaving the ACC for the Big Ten. Both see positives for the future, though.

    • Love Turge's attitude!

    • Turge will be fine. The Big 10 is a perfectly fine basketball conference. Not being able to recruit based on playing UNC and Duke seems like kind of a loser's attitude to me anyway.

If I was Tillman I might be more legitimately concerned. But then again the Maryland brand is so big in lacrosse I imagine we will be fine. And I don't really care about lacrosse anyway soo.....

Everything that you said -- minus the not caring part, of course -- was the gist of what Tillman said.

Maryland has gone through enough past success to continue to be solid. Not to mention, it has the most fertile recruiting ground in the nation in its backyard.

Tillman said he'll look at becoming an independent or playing in the Big Ten if the conference starts supporting the sport. If they're an independent, they should be fine -- like Johns Hopkins. If they're in the Big Ten, they should run away with conference every year, but Penn State is on the rise with coach Jeff Tambroni.

Johns Hopkins is my exact response to anyone that thinks Men's Lax will suffer or we can't be successful in lacrosse going forward.

    • mds lax brand is absurd at this point. back to back championship games. back to back number 1 recruiting classes. i think we can make it out ok

    • I love Turge and a but for some reason I don't trust that he'll stick around. And I'm not even talking about the Kansas job. If something else opens up in the ACC he might jump ship.

    • Duke? Cuse?

Dude I'm super paranoid now. Idk why but I am. Irrationally so.

    • I'm listening to Turge right now on his show and he's fine.

First of all, as much as we love him, he hasn't done anything tangible yet. There is no way Duke or Cuse go after him.

    • I have this feeling (based on nothing) that this move will be huge for the sport of lacrosse and its ultimate expansion.

    • He's not gonna start all over again with the program pointed in the the right direction - especially if he thinks his budget is about to get upped with serious $. The list of schools you could even think about leaving Maryland for - even as a sideways move - is, what, 15 or 20 at most? And how many of them are making MT a priority if he showed interest?

In a few years, after some real success at Maryland, I could see Turge making the short list for elite seats, like Carolina when Roy Williams retires. I don't think he's going anywhere for a while though.

I'm going to say that we can forget about ACC teams scheduling us voluntarily for a while here in any sport.

Yes, they need us more than we need them. They want all the exposure they can get for recruiting. I feel we leave on good terms with those schools, they all know its about the dollars. They would do the same, who knows by 2014 UNC and UVA might jump ship too.

Coach T is a huge family man -- let him have some success here, let Ann put down some roots, and the kids start moving up to middle school and high school and it would take a lot for him to pull that trigger and head elsewhere.

With Self being signed through 2022 -- the only job that scares me is Carolina and I think they are in the Big 10 along with UVA when the dust clears.
